Obituary

RACHEL ALDEN

DOVER - FOXCROFT - Rachel Alden, 91, died Jan. 3, 2011, at Mayo Regional Hospital. Born Nov. 1, 1919, in Foxcroft, now Dover-Foxcroft, Rachel was the daughter of Bernard E. Sr. and Katheryn (Ireland) Alden. Rachel was an independent-thinking woman who was ahead of her time, and lived a full life with fun adventures and true friends. She was concerned about the world, had strong political opinions, cared about children and thought that everyone deserved a good education. A graduate of Foxcroft Academy and the University of Maine, Orono, with a degree in English, Rachel spent a year in war work at Colvert Distillery, Baltimore, and then embarked on a career teaching secondary English in the Massachusetts public schools of Norwell, Mass., Middleborough, Mass., and Reading, Mass. She retired to her home in Maine after 12 years of teaching at Mary C. Wheeler School, Providence, R.I. Her summers were full with graduate study, teaching, travel to Europe, and many happy days spent at her Sebec Lake cottage in Bowerbank. For a number of years she spent her winters in Englewood, Fla. Rachel was predeceased by her parents; and two brothers, Bernard Jr. and John W. Alden. She is survived by her niece, Pamela K. Alden of Spokane, Wash; her sister-in-law, Myrna Alden; and others she knew as niece and nephews, Karen Fraser, Timothy, Jeffrey and Christopher Dunn and their families. She is also survived by her dear friend, Barbara M. Stanhope, with whom she made her home. Special thanks to Tracy Raymond for her wonderful care of Rachel, especially in the last few months. At her request, there will be no services. Burial will take place in the spring in the family lot at Sebec Corner Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft.
