     Alice J. Silsby, daughter of Herbert Trafton Silsby and Margaret Fannie Schoppe, was born on 4 June 1896 at Maine.1,2,3

     Alice was appointed as postmaster for Aurora, Maine after the death of her father, Herbert, on 6 November 1936 at Aurora, Hancock, Maine. She was released from the position, 24 Apr 1964.4

     Alice J. Silsby died on 29 September 1975 at Aurora, Hancock, Maine, at age 79.5,3,6 and was buried at Aurora Cemetery, Aurora, Hancock, Maine.7

ALICE J SILSBY

AURORA - Alice J. Silsby, 79, died Sept. 29, at her home in Aurora. She was born June 4, 1896, at Aurora, daughter of Herbert T. and Margaret (Schoppee) Silsby. She was a member of the Amherst and Aurora Congregational Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Irene Chapter No 97 of Ellsworth. She was a registered nurse and a school nurse from 1924 to 1930. Also she was a nurse at Eastern Maine General Hospital, the Silsby Hospital in Rockland, and tne Milo hospital. She was manager of the Union River Telephone Co from 1936 to 1953. Also she was postmaster of Aurora from 1936 to 1966 in which year she retired. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Adelbert Bridges of Bangor and Mrs. Leslie Burrill of Bangor and Boxford, Mass., one brother Justice William S. Silsby of Aurora; four nieces and eight nephews; Mrs. O. B. Eleanor Hill, of West Hartford. Conn., Dr. Donald Bridges of Bangor, Mrs. David (Margaret) Hempstead of Boxford, Mass., Herbert T. Silsby II of Ellsworth, William S. Silsby Jr., of Brewer, Samuel S. Silsby of Augusta, James A. Silsby of Ellsworth, David Silsby and Carl Silsby of Augusta, Charles S. Silsby Jr., of Bangor .Mrs Earl (Barbara) McGraw of Hampden, and Mrs, Preston (Beverly) McLean of Bangor. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p m at the Clark Mitchell Funeral Home, 299 Union St., Bangor ,where friends may call Wednesday from 7 to 9 pm.13

     Benjamin Silsby, son of Samuel Silsby and Hannah Goodell, was born in 1792 at New Hampshire.5,6

     Benjamin Silsby with his three brothers were first settlers of Aurora.
Aurora.—Incorporated February 1, 1831. Area 23,040 acres. Population, 212. Wealth, per capita, $155. Derived its name from Aurora, goddess of morning. Its first settlers were four brothers, Samuel, Benjamin, David and Roswell Silsby, who came here in 1805. For some years they had, as there were no roads, to carry their grain on their backs, seven or eight miles to have it ground. This was one of the "lottery" townships, and was incorporated as Plantation No. 27, in 1822. The "Whale's Back," one of those formations known as "horse backs," is in this town. The "air-line road" passes over it for a distance of three and one-half miles. Decennary loss, 65. State valuation, $32,052. - IT. S. valuation, $56,154. Union soldiers, 27 ; State aid, $20 ; town bounty, $1,983 ; cost per recruit, $117.

     Benjamin, son of Samuel Silsby and Hannah Goodell, married Polly Mann, daughter of David Mann and Sarah (?), on 23 February 1815 at Brewer, Penobscot, Maine.7,8,9

     Benjamin Silsby died on 13 June 1859 at Aurora, Hancock, Maine, His cause of death was cancer10,11 and was buried at Aurora Cemetery, Aurora, Hancock, Maine.12
