Horace S. Smith

M, b. March 1884, d. 12 March 1912
Relationships
Granduncle of Dianne Elizabeth Smith
Granduncle of Ellen June Smith
Horace S. Smith, son of Sanford B. and Jennie L. Smith
Horace S. Smith, son of Sanford B. Smith and Jennie L. Smith, was born in March 1884 at Maine.1

Horace S. Smith is in this photograph with Alfonso and Jennie and Marion Elizabeth Davis and Marcia C. Smith, which was taken circa 1910 This photograph was not dated, however, it is assumed to have been taken about 1910.2

On 10 January 1912, Horace sent a letter to Marion . Written on "Postal" stationary, Horace is telling Marion of his reassignment to a different post office. He expresses his disappointment, yet is glad he has a government job. Horace comments on a visit to Harmony, and his thoughts on Marcia's health.3

On 21 January 1912, Horace sent a post card to Marion . Horace, is now in New York City. It will be just one month and 20 days before his death.3

Horace S. Smith died on 12 March 1912, at New York City, New York.4,5 He was buried in Mt. Hope (Bangor) Cemetery at Bangor, Penobscot, Maine.6,7

Census

Horace S. Smith appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Wellington, Piscataquis, Maine in the household of his grand parents Edward Davis and Abigal and his parents.8

     Horace's obituary read as follows:
HARMONY - Mrs. Alphonso Davis received word last week that her son, Horace Smith, was dangerously ill in Bellevue hospital in New York city where he had but recently been transferred as railway mail clerk, and Mr. Davis left at once for that place, but before he reached there Mrs. Davis received another dispatch saying that her son had passed away. Mr. Davis returned Friday with the remains and the funeral services were held at the home on Sunday, Rev. Mr. Mulligan of Athens speaking words of comfort to the sorely stricken family. The body was taken to Bangor on Monday for burial in Mt. Hope cemetery. The cause of the young man's death was pneumonia, lasting but five days, and his age 28 years. He was a graduate of Dexter high school where he made many friends, and had been in the mail service for ten years, the greater part of which time had been spent in Augusta, leaving there only about six weeks ago. Of a fine, manly bearing, pleasing manner and true gentlemanly instincts, he won friends whereever he went, and was held in the highest esteem by those who knew him best. Exceptionally fond of home and the loved ones there he always spent his spare time there, and sorely will they miss those visits to which they have always looked forward with so much pleasure. Besides the mother and step-father, who has been in every sense a father, he leaves two sisters, Miss Marcia Smith of Bangor, and Mrs. Clifford Burrill of Dedham. The profusion of the floral offerings, among which were a beautiful wreath from the clerks in the Augusta post office and a Masonic piece from Bethlehem lodge, F. and A. M. of Augusta spoke silently of the love and esteem in which he was held. Among the relatives and friends from out of town who attended the funeral were Mrs. Cora [Smith] Reynolds of Northeast Harbor, Thomas Smith and Joseph Smith of Marion, Rev. Oscar Smith of Orono, Miss Nellie Smith of Shiloh, Orlando Staples of Levant and R. S. Pratt of Bangor.9

Marcia C. Smith1

Relationships
Grandaunt of Dianne Elizabeth Smith
Grandaunt of Ellen June Smith
Marcia C Smith, daughter of Sanford and Jennie Smith
Marcia C. Smith, daughter of Sanford B. Smith and Jennie L. Smith, was born in December 1879 at Washington, Maine.1

Marcia C. Smith is in this photograph with Alfonso and Jennie and Marion Elizabeth Davis and Horace S. Smith, which was taken circa 1910 This photograph was not dated, however, it is assumed to have been taken about 1910.2

On 23 August 1910 Marcia sent a post card to Jennie . You will notice, the post card is addressed to Mrs. Alfonso Davis, in Harmony, Maine. It appears Marcia has left home to work in another town. She tells her Mom, (Jennie) her work keeps her busy. And, on the back of her card shows how busy, with a bee after a bear.3

On 17 February 1912 Marcia sent a letter to Marion . Marcia's comments seem to indicate Marion is by herself for a night. She also says Mama (Jennie) received a Valentine from Uncle Joe. (Uncle Joe was probably Joseph Smith). Marcia seems to be having a digestive problem. She tells Marion of having to take a malted milk and the following day trying a baked potato. She commented about Josie (Davis) visiting.4

On 28 March 1912, Marcia sent a letter to Marcia C. Smith . First of all, the letter does not have a year stated. It was assumed to be written March 28 1912. Marcia requests Marion and Clifford sign some papers and send them on. It appears Aunt Nellie (Smith) was visiting and was preparing to take the train. Marcia asked Marion how her tomatoes were coming. Marcia stated time of day her's were planted, to include baking the dirt prior to planting. She talks of a "new" neighbor moving in; Mr. Skunk, under grammy's piazza.5

On 22 April 1912 Marcia sent a post card to Marion . Marcia was planning a trip to Bangor to see Oscar (Oscar is her uncle, Rev. Oscar Smith) and a doctor (Dr. Fellows, she probably is still having stomach problems).
She was requesting her keys to her trunk.4

Marcia C. Smith died at age 32, on 7 May 1912, at Bangor, Penobscot, Maine. Marcia's cause of death was listed as _____ jaundice following occlusion of bile duct. (When the bile ducts become blocked, bile builds up in the liver, and jaundice (yellow color of the skin) develops due to the increasing levels of bilirubin in the blood.)6,7
She was buried in Mt. Hope (Bangor) Cemetery at Bangor, Washington, Maine.8,9

Census

Marcia C. Smith appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Pembroke, Washington, Maine in the household of her parents, Sanford and Jennie.10

     Marcia's obituary read as follows: as printed in the Bangor Daily News;
"SMITH - In Bangor, May 6, Marcia C. Smith, aged 32 years, 5 month, 4 days."
Another obituary, from an unknown newspaper as follows:
"The death of Marcia C. Smith, daughter of Jennie L. Davis occurred in a Bangor hospital on Monday after a long illness. She was for ten years a stenographer for the Penobscot Machinery Co., and had many friends in Bangor and Dexter where she formerly resided. The funeral will be held at the home of her uncle, Rev. Oscar Smith of Orono, on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. George Martin officiating."11,12,13

Hezekiah, at age 20, married Hannah Austin, daughter of Thomas Austin and Hannah Foster, on 16 July 1722 at Haverhill, Massachusetts, Hannah was Hezekiah's second cousin.3

Hezekiah had a career of a man that loved a good time but was well disciplined for it. The Church, all powerful and unbending in those early days, punished him by either by deferring the baptism of his children or at best yielding only on his wife's account and baptizing them in her name as sponsor. This was the old fashioned hell fire prepared for and visited upon unchristened infants of the day. Hezekiah, it appears, went in rather a bit too strongly for the concoctions of molasses and rum and such missteps could not be condoned by the church. On on 4 January 1732 at a church meeting he was charged with "being disguised with drink."4

The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Just about a year before that, in October 1940, President Roosevelt had signed into law the first peacetime selective service draft in U.S. history, due to rising world conflicts. After the U.S. entered WWII a new selective service act required that all men between ages 18 and 65 register for the draft. Between November 1940 and October 1946, over 10 million American men were registered. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the "old man's registration", was conducted on 27 April 1942 and registered men who born on or between 28 April 1877 and 16 February 1897 - men who were between 45 and 64 years old - and who were not already in the military. Hugh filled out a draft card for World War II on 26 April 1942 (at age 53), while living at 17 Belmont Street, Lowell, Middlesex, Massachusetts.
