St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Brewer was the scene of a charming wedding Saturday at 9 a.m. when Miss Linda Catherine Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry C. Brown, Penobscot Terrace, Brewer, became the bride of Robert Edward Kiah Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Kiah, 320 North Main Street, Brewer. Bouquets of pink and white gladioli decorated the altar for the double-ring ceremony. The Rev. Richard P. Rice officiated. Wedding music Including the traditional marches was played by Mrs. James Osgood, organist, who also accompanied the soloist, Mrs. Joseph Murphy, as she sang "On This Day O Beautiful Mother", "Ave Verum", "Ave Maria", and "Panis Angelicus". The bride, given in marriage by her father, was attractive in a chapel length gown of taffeta with a tulip train, fashioned with a basque bodice, a high scoop neckline, and long pointed sleeves. Re-embroidered alen-eon lace trimmed the bodice and front of the skirt. Her elbow-length veil of sflk illusion was attached to a lace cap with pearls and sequins. She wore a pearl necklace, the gift of the bridegroom and carried a prayer book with a white orchid and satin streamers. The maid of honor, Miss Linda Grover of Brewer, was attired in a street-length gown of pale pink satin brocade with matching headpiece and veil. The bridesmaids, Miss Pat Roy and Miss Beverly Brown of Portland, wore street-length gowns of pale blue satin brocade with matching headpieces and veils. The attendants carried colonial bouquets of pink and white carnations and babys breath. The best man was Dennis, Kiah, brother of the bridegroom. The ushers were John Flynn Jr., of Brewer, Charles Taylor of Bridgton, Lt Paul Kiah of Fort Bragg, N. C., and James DeVere III, of Coaldwick, N. J. A reception followed at the Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono. Baskets of white carnations and blue Shasta daisies were used in decorating. The guest book was clrculated by Mrs. Thomas Largay, sister of the bridegroom. Assisting in serving were Miss Kathy Hamm of Brewer and Mrs. George Brennan of Dover, N.H. Mr. and Mrs. Kiah left by motor on a trip to the White Mountains and Lake Champlain. The bride was attired in a white linen suit with navy and red accessories, complemented with a white orchid corsage. The bride was graduated from Brewer High School, class of 1962, and attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Portland. She is a member of the Brewer Sub-Deb Club. The bridegroom, a graduate of Brewer High School in I960, and the University of Maine, 1964, is affiliated with the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He is employed by Bancroft and Martin in Brewer. Mr. and 'Mrs. Kiah will reside at 320 North Main Street, Brewer.1,3


     Robert died at age 76, on 26 September 2018, at Virginia,2 and was buried at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, Virginia.4

MONTCLAIRLt. Col Robert E. Kiah, Jr. (Bob) passed away peacefully this past Wednesday surrounded by friends and family at his home in Northern Virginia. The son of Robert E. Kiah and Josephine Burrill Kiah, Bob was born on December 14th, 1941 at the Russell Hospital on Holyoke Street in Brewer Maine. He was born seven days after Pearl Harbor. Robert graduated from Brewer High School in 1960 and went to the University of Maine in Orono. He graduated from the University in 1964 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Robert spent one tour of duty in Vietnam. In 1972, he received his Masters Degree from the University of Michigan. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1988 after 24 years of service. Bob held executive positions in the Defense Contracting Industry retiring as a member of the Board of Directors and Senior VP for Computing Technologies, Inc. Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Kuniko Kinjo Kiah and other family including Robert III, Alison, Kevin, Haydee, Catherine, Robert IV, Ryan, Reed, Rachael, Kyros and Isabel and many close relatives and friends. Brewer Couple Married At Noon on Saturday

"Miss Josephine Dorr Burill Is Bride of Robert E. Kiah" A lovely June bridal was solemnized at noon Saturday in the rectory of St. Teresa Catholic church, South Brewer, by the Rev. Morris Griffin, for Miss Josephine Dorr Burrill and Robert Edward Kiah. The bride wore the gown and tulle veil her mother wore at her own nuptials on December 8, 1910. The gown was of white silk lansdowne trimmed with old lace, and the veil was caught to a coronet lace cap. Her flowers were a shower bouquet of bride's roses, sweet peas, lilies, and baby's breath. Miss Jean Burnll, sister of the bride, was maid of honor and wore blue taffeta trimmed in pink with a wide blue straw hat, also trimmed in pink. Her bouquet was of pink rosrs and larkspur. Clarence Kiah attended his brother as best man. Mrs. Harold S. Burrill, the bride's mother, wore sheer figured georgette with a matching light blue picture hat. Mrs. David Kiah, mother of the bridegroom, was gowned in a navy blue two-piece dress with navv blue accessories. Following the ceremony, 'the bridal party and guests went to the bride's home at 32 School street for the wedding reception. A screen interwoven with white lilacs and fir made a lovely background for the bridal party in the receiving line. White lilacs also decorated the serving table. Silver, gold and blue, the bride's sorority colors, were also carried out in the decorations and refreshments. In charge of the guest book was Miss Frances Kiah, and the Misses Maxine Harding and Vera VanTassel presided over the gifts. The wedding cake was made and presented bv Mrs Frank Cowan, and Miss Barbara Cowan cut the bride's cake, after the bride had cut the traditional first slice. Helping with the serving were the Misses June Burrill and Doris Dorr, cousins of the bride, and the Misses Gwendolyn Baker and Zelda Baker, close friends. Miss Kate Fitzgerald caterred. After the reception, the bridal couple left bv motor for a two-week wedding trip to Cape Cod. For her going-away ensemble," Mrs. Kiah chose a navy blue jacket frock with a matching sailor hat, each trimmed in red. Shoes, gloves and bag were also of navy blue. On their return, they will be at home at 55 Holyoke street. Out-of-town guests at the ceremony and reception were: the bride's grandmother, Mrs. Eugene Dorr, her uncle and aunt. Captain and Mrs. Herman Dorr, her cousin, Miss Doris Dorr, and Mr. and Mrs Lewis Hubbard, close friends, all of Orland. Mrs. Kiah, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold S. Burrill, 32 School street, Brewer, was graduated from Brewer high school in 1930 and in 1934 from the University of Maine, where she specialized in English and history and was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. For the past year she has taught in the normal training department at Maine School of Commerce, Bangor. Mr. Kiah, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Kiah, 33 Century street, South Brewer, was graduated from Brewer high school in 1928, and attended Maine School of Commerce. He is now employed, in the business department of the Bangor Daily News.2


     Robert Edward Kiah died on 17 October 1977 at Bangor, Penobscot, Maine, at age 66.4,5 and was buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor, Penobscot, Maine.6

     Robert and Josephine appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Brewer, Penobscot, Maine, enumerated 6 April 1940. He was working as a newspaper circulation manger Their children, Sue Ann were listed as living with them. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $16.26 in the year 2012. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2012 would have cost $.21 cents in 1940.7

ROBERT E KIAH BREWER — Robert E. Kiah, 66, of 320 North Main Street, Brewer died suddenly October 17. He was born in South Brewer, January 3, 1911, son of David P. and Eva (Verrow) Kiah. He was a graduate of Brewer High School ond the Maine School of Commerce. He was general manager of the Bangor Daily News at the time of his retirement in 1973, having worked there since 1932. When Kiah joined the NEWS the paper had a circulation of 20000 and employed 40 persons. When he retired circulation had grown to about 80000 the payroll to 289. He worked for and with three generations of owners and publishers of the NEWS. During that time he was involved with the growth of the company starting with the construction of a new press building in 1951 on the site of the present plant which was erected in 1955. He supervised the beginning of the paper's conversion to computers in all departments and the transition of the paper from hot type to photocomposition. In an interview at the time of his retirement Kiah recalled that only once during his tenure did the crew fail to get out a newspaper. That was during the storm of December 1962. "The crew was ready we could have published a paper that day but there was just no way to get the papers delivered." He was a trustee of the Brewer Savings Bank and a member of the City Club of Bangor, the Penobscot Valley Country Club, the Kiwanis Club of Brewer, the Tarratine Club and was a member of the board of Directors of St Michael's Center, Bangor. Survived by his wife Josephine (Burrill) Kiah Brewer; four children, Mrs. F. Thomas (Sue) Largay Orrington, Major Robert' E. Kiah Jr., Santa Anna Calif., Dennis B. Kiah Dover-Foxeroft, Mrs. Alton R. (Barbara) Wentworth Dover - Foxcroft; 16 grandchildren; two great -grandchildren; one sister, Miss M. Frances Kiah Brewer; one brother, D Clarence Kiah, Greenwich, Conn; several nieces, nephews, cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard A. Kiah in 1971. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 1:30 pm at St Joseph's Catholic Church, Brewer, with the Rev Richard E Harvey as celebrant. Burial will be in Mt Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at the Lawrence V Kiley Funeral Home, 69 State Street, Brewer, Wednesday 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 pm.8
