Althea Velma Carter Burks

ELLSWORTH - Althea Velma Carter Burks, 82, passed peacefully March 5, 2012, with her family at her side in Bangor. Althea was born Oct. 24, 1929, in Brewer, the daughter of Vasco E. Carter and Madelene Wyman (Burrill) Carter of West Ellsworth. She graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1947 and in 1948 married Hubert J. Burks Jr. of Richmond, Va., and traveled the world for more than 26 years as a proud Navy wife. They were married for more than 63 years. Althea was a founding member of St. Andrew Lutheran, Ellsworth, and a star patient at Eastern Maine Dialysis Unit, Ellsworth, for 8 1/2 years. She is survived by her husband; four children who were the joy of her life, James V. Burks, Madelene R. Burks Gowie, David E. Burks and Elizabeth A. Burks; sister, Nancy Shaw Carter; 25 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many cousins. Family and friends are invited to visit Althea's family 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 9, at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 175 Downeast Highway, Ellsworth, where a celebration of life Communion service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Althea's memory to Eastern Maine Dialysis Unit, 11 Short St., Ellsworth, ME 04605 or St. Andrew Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 145, Ellsworth, ME 04605. MARTHA P. EMERY

CANBY, MINN. - Martha P. Emery died Tues., Sept. 17, 1996, at the Senior Haven Nursing Home in Canby, Minn. She was 85. Martha was born on Feb. 11, 1911, the daughter of Daniel and Bertha (Brown) Carter. She married Richard D. Emery in Dedham, Nov. 2, 1940. Martha enjoyed quilting, embroidery, crafts, and writing poetry and articles. She was a member of the Dedham Historical Society and she wrote and had published the History of Dedham. Martha is survived by her daughter. Flora A. Emery-Heise of Canby, Minn; stepdaughters; Myrtle Lawrence of Bangor, Edith Coyne of Brewer, and Mildred Perry of Ypsilanti, Mich. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Martha was predeceased by her husband, Richard; her son, Adalbert Smalley; her daughter, M. Marie Carter; her brother, Wilson Carter; and her sister, Flora. Memorial services will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Dedham Congregational Church. Burial will be at Brookside Cemetery in Dedham. Blessed be her memory..7
