Private James Madison Stanhope was the son of Warren and Mary (Butler) Stanhope. He was married to Julia Frances Hatch on March 5, 1841 in Charleston, Penobscot, Maine. They were the parents of seven children; Mary Frances (1842-1919), Amasa H. (1841-1922), Laura J. (1845-1863), PVT Cassius Clay (1847-1881) who served in the United States Union Army with the famous Maine 20th Infantry Regiment, Dr. Eusebius Hale, MD (1852-1897), Dr. Alvin Hatch, MD (1857-1931), and Frederick A. (1859-1937).
At the time of the 1850 US Federal Census (16 August 1850) he was a farmer in Charleston. In 1860 (24 June 1860 US Federal Census) he was residing and farming in Bradford, Penobscot, Maine. On June 3, 1863 he registered for the Civil War draft and went active duty on that date as a Private in the Washington DC Calvary, Company K1.
He served in the United States Union Army during the Civil War with distinction until his death on active duty on May 11, 1864. All of his children survived him.7,8,9
and was buried at Corner Cemetery, Bradford, Penobscot, Maine.10

     James and Julia appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Charleston, Penobscot, Maine, enumerated 16 August 1850. He was working as a farmer. His real estate valued at $500.00. Their children, Mary J., Amasa, Laura J. and Cassius C. were listed as living with them.11

     James and Julia appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Bradford, Penobscot, Maine, enumerated 27 June 1860. James was a farmer with a real estate value of $200.00 and personal property of $100.00. Their children, Mary J., Amasa, Laura J., Cassius C., Eusebius Hale, Alvin Hatch and Frederick A. were listed as living with them.12
