Simple Ceremony In First Congregational Church In Brewer

The Brewer First Congregational parsonage was the scene of a simple wedding Friday night at 8 o'clock when Miss Margaret I Reed, daughter of Mr. and ’Mrs. Gardner E. Reed, 87 Union street, Brewer, became the bride of Elwin Everett Black, son of Mr. and Mrs. Everett J. Black, of Hollis Center. The Rev. Basil C. Gleason, pastor read the double ring seivlce. Miss Geraldine Reed, sister of the bride was maid of honor and Kenneth B. Dresser of Bucksport was best man. The bride wore soldier blue alpaca with Burgundy accessories and a corsage of yellow roses. Miss Reed's dress was beige wool with navy accessories and her corsage was of red roses. Mrs Reed, the bride’s mother, wore black crepe with white accessories and Mrs. Black, mother of the bridegroom was in navy blue crepe with white accessories. Following the ceremony a reception was held a the home of the bride's parents attended by about 75 relatives and friends. The bridal party was assisted in receiving by Mr. and Mrs. Reed and Mr. and Mrs. Black, parents of the bride and bridegroom. Mrs. Donald Reed presided at the gift table. Assisting in serving were Mrs. Melvin Kimball, Mrs. Albert Hewey, Mrs. George Crane, and Miss Ruth Black. The bride's cake was made by Mrs. Robert I. Turner, an old friend of the family. The bride was graduated from Brewer High school and has been employed at the Bangor State hospital. The brldegroom also a graduate of Brewer High school Is employed with Swift and company Bangor. Mr. and Mrs. Black left by motor on a wedding trip to Boston and will be at home after November 15 at 16 Bowdoln street, Bangor. Obituary

BREWER - Margaret R. 'Peg' Black-Connor, 97, passed away Sat. April 8, 2017, at a Bangor hospital. She was born December 15, 1919, in Hudson, the daughter of Gardner E. and A. Gertrude (Stover) Reed. Peg graduated from Brewer High School, Class of 1939. She married Elwin E. Black on Nov. 7, 1941. They owned and operated Black's Dairy Freeze for 8 years. Peg was a member of the First Congregational Church of Brewer. She was active in the Women's Fellowship and held several offices over the years. After the death of Elwin in 1971 she volunteered her time with Literacy Volunteers and Meals for Me. She worked for the Brewer Public Library for 20 years, retiring in 1994. In 1991 she married Edward I. Connor. They enjoyed 10 years of companionship, traveling and often visiting friends and relatives, until Ed's passing in 2001. Peg was an avid reader, enjoyed crossword puzzles, weekly card games with friends, staying in touch with high school friends in a club called Not a "He" Club, Wednesday morning breakfast club, bowling, traveling, and cooking. She especially loved being outdoors, planting and tending to her flowers for all to enjoy. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. Peg touched the lives of others with her kind and giving ways. She will fondly be remembered by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by four children, Russell E. Black and wife Roberta of ME and FL, Richard I. Black and wife Joanne of Newport and Zephyrhills,FL, Catherine A. Wilson of Brewer, Rodney C. Black and wife Lisa of Atascadero, CA. Seven grandchildren; Vickie Black-Vigue and husband Tom of Tacoma, WA, Kevin J. Black and wife Zina of Bangor, Tavi Taylor Black and husband Dorsey Davis of Vashon, WA, Michelle L. Bloom and husband Eric of Milford, KS, Lori J. Brown and husband Christopher of Etna, Matthew Black of Atascadero, CA, Rachel Black Valsquez and husband Johnny of Riverside, CA. Seven great-grandchildren; Johnathan F. Noonan and wife Haley, Andrew T. Noonan, Casey Black, Jake Black, Dawson L. Brown, Owen M. Brown and Zelda J. Davis; one sister, Geraldine Henkener and husband Bill of Ft. Walton Beach, FL; many nieces and nephews. Peg was predeceased by a grandson, Everett Taylor Black; six sisters; G. Armida Kimball, Barbara A. Townsend, Reta A. Fernald, Blanche M. Hewey, Marjorie F. Kelley and Mildred A. Crane; four brothers; Carleton G. Reed, Donald E.A. Reed, Stanley A. Reed, and Gardiner E. Reed Jr., and one special sister-in-law, Ruth Black Petrie and husband Robert "Bob." A Service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 17, 2017, at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 S. Main Street, Brewer, with Rev. Grace Bartlett, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Brewer, presiding. Friends may visit with the family from 1 p.m. until the start of the service. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the Family Reception Rooms of the Brewer Chapel following the service.
