  5. [S21] Ancestry Web Site, online http://www.ancestry.com, This is a collection of lists of Civil War Draft Registrations. There were four drafts between 1863 and 1865, which included 3.175 million records. Historically, the 1863 draft was one of the most tenuous moments in the Union outside of the battles fought on Northern soil. Most of the concern was due to the draft riots that took place in New York in 1863.

These records include 631 volumes of registries and are basically lists of individuals who registered for the draft. The records are split into two different classes, Class I are those aged 20-35 as well as those 36-45 and unmarried. Class II is everyone else that registered.

    The registry contains information including:•Class•Congressional district•County•State•Residence•Name•Age on July 1, 1863•Race•Profession•Married status•Birthplace•Former military service•Remarks
The actual draft registration records are available in NARA regional archives and sometimes contain more information than the consolidated lists.

Jennie W. Pratt, wife of John C. Weston
Jennie Weltha Pratt, daughter of Horatio Pratt and Mary Ann Kimball, was born on 18 December 1852 at Maine.2,3

Jennie, at age 19, married John Colby Weston at age 26 on 19 October 1872 by S. C. Elliott.4,5

Jennie Weltha Pratt was mentioned in the Will of her father, Horatio Pratt on 28 August 1885 Horatio's "Last Will and Testament" was stated as follows:

"That I, Horatio Pratt of Foxcroft in the county of Piscataquis and the State of Maine....
FIRST: To each of my grand children, Florence M. Pratt, daughter of my deceased son, Charles W. Pratt, Orman Pratt, Fred W. Pratt and Marion L. Pratt, children of my deceased son George W. Pratt, I give and bequeath the sum of one dollar.
SECOND: All my remaining property after the payment of the above named said and bequests, I give bequeath and devise in equal shares to my two daughters, Jennie W. Weston, wife of John Colby Weston and Lizzie M. Cross, wife of Moses S. Cross."6

Jennie Weltha Pratt died at age 65, on 28 March 1918.1

Jennie Weltha Pratt was buried at Lee Cemetery, Dover Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine.7

Jennie's obituary read as follows: was in newspaper as follows:

Mrs. Jennie Weston Dawn of the morning of March 28 brought the closing of a truly beautiful life in the death of Mrs. Jennie Weston. Dawn! What an appropriate time for her sweet spirit to drift on into that Beautiful Isle Of Somewhere about which she always loved to think and hear, and in which her faith was deep and strong. Wafted on the rosy clouds of sunrise into that New Life we, who knew her best, can see her taking up her new duties as cheerfully, as bravely and as uncomplainingly as she laid them down here. Mrs. Weston was a woman of extraordinarily fine fiber, of strong and pleasing personality and of girlish charm. She was optimistic always, finding and keeping watered the bright and sunny spots on the road of life, thus being a source of joy and inspiration to those who came to her blue and downhearted. Contentment was hers; and wasn't this (in these days of greedy world unrest in which she lived) an unusual state of mind? A state which many of us would covet. Her home was her sanctuary. Loyal to her husband, devoted to her children, and hospitable and cordial to her friends all basked in her love and sunshine of her smile. No task was too hard; no sacrifice too great in behalf of her children. Besides having a real mother's care for them she was a jolly comrade among them. No matter how full of work the day she was never too busy to pause for a friendly chat—one of those cheery little talks that sent you away with a song on your lips. And there were those delightfully interesting letters into which crept the charm of her personality—the pansy or sweet pea pressed between the pages, or the lines from a choice poem fraught with meaning for you or me. Her maiden name was Jane Weltha Pratt. When a girl she became a member of the Free Baptist church of Dover, and was true to her faith to the last. She was a loyal and conscientious member, never failing to do her share, and to be in her pew on Sunday mornings in an attitude of mind receptive to all good. The remarks of her pastor, Rev. H. F. Huse, who officiated at the funeral held at the home at 2 p. m. o'clock on Easter Sunday were most beautiful and fitting. Her two favorite hymns, "Jesus Savior, Pilot Me" and "Beautiful Isle Of Somewhere," were most beautifully rendered by a male quartet consisting of Harry L. Smith, E. J. Smith, W. M. Steward and the Rev. J. H. Wilkins. The body was placed in the Dover tomb. She will be laid to rest in the Lee cemetery where many of her relatives and old neighbors are resting from their cares, and whose companionship she had always so enjoyed. She will be sadly missed by her devoted grandchildren in whom she always took a deep and loving interest. They are Evangeline Steward and Colby Weston Steward of New Haven Conn., Lawrence Weston Davee and "Baby" Pauline Weltha Davee of Orono. She is survived by her husband J. C. Weston; two daughters, Mrs. Everett W. Davee of Orono, and Mrs. Stanley J. Steward of New Haven, Conn., two sons, Caleb H. of Foxcroft and Harold C. of New Haven, Conn., also a sister, Mrs. Moses S. Cross of Foxcroft. Let us not weep for her, relatives and friends. We cannot but be better for having known her, for it is women like her who, "Make life, death and that vast forever, one grand sweet song." As an intimate friend of Mrs. Weston's for nearly ten years, having lived much in her sweet companionship, I have written of her as I knew her. A. E. B.8
