     Sylvia D. Stevens was born circa 1915 at Maine.2

     Sylvia, married Herbert Ardell Judkins, son of Clyde H. Judkins and Clarice A. Pratt, on 11 April 1936 at Maine.3

     Sylvia died on 2 January 2007, at Toccoa Falls, Georgia,4 and was buried at Pine Grove Cemetery, Dover Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine.4

Census

     Sylvia and Herbert appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Garland, Penobscot, Maine, at Notch Road, enumerated 3 April 1940. Herbert was renting, with a $5.00 monthly. He completed 8th grade. His last residence was Dover, Piscataquis. He was working as a laborer for the 'W P A'. (The Works Progress Administration (renamed during 1939 as the Works Project Administration; WPA) was the largest and most ambitious New Deal agency, employing millions of unskilled workers to carry out public works projects,including the construction of public buildings and roads, and operated large arts, drama, media, and literacy projects. At its peak in 1938 it provided paid jobs for three million unemployed men (and some women). Their children, Carmine, Shirley M. and Madeline were listed as living with them. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $16.26 in the year 2012. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2012 would have cost $.21 cents in 1940.5

SYLVIA DELIA STEVENS WITHERLY

TOCCOA FALLS, Ga. - Sylvia Delia Stevens Witherly, 91, of 301 Rainwater Drive, Toccoa Falls, Ga., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at her residence. She was born Aug. 28, 1915, in Garland, the daughter of the late Maurice and Mable Crockett Stevens. Having lived most of her life in Maine, she lived 30 years in Florida and moved to Toccoa, Ga., three years ago to live and be cared for by her daughter, Sandra Nickerson. She was a member of the First Alliance Church, Florida. She loved animals, roses and country music. She especially enjoyed living in sunny Port Charlotte, Fla. She was predeceased by her two daughters, Corine (Rene) Dinsmore of Holden and Madeline Gudroe of Dexter. Survivors include three daughters, Shirley May Judkins, Sandra Nickerson and Rosalie Wyman, who reside in Toccoa, Ga; 20 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Dover South Mills Cemetery, Maine.
