Private James Madison Stanhope was the son of Warren and Mary (Butler) Stanhope. He was married to Julia Frances Hatch on March 5, 1841 in Charleston, Penobscot, Maine. They were the parents of seven children; Mary Frances (1842-1919), Amasa H. (1841-1922), Laura J. (1845-1863), PVT Cassius Clay (1847-1881) who served in the United States Union Army with the famous Maine 20th Infantry Regiment, Dr. Eusebius Hale, MD (1852-1897), Dr. Alvin Hatch, MD (1857-1931), and Frederick A. (1859-1937).
At the time of the 1850 US Federal Census (16 August 1850) he was a farmer in Charleston. In 1860 (24 June 1860 US Federal Census) he was residing and farming in Bradford, Penobscot, Maine. On June 3, 1863 he registered for the Civil War draft and went active duty on that date as a Private in the Washington DC Calvary, Company K1.
He served in the United States Union Army during the Civil War with distinction until his death on active duty on May 11, 1864. All of his children survived him.7,8,9
and was buried at Corner Cemetery, Bradford, Penobscot, Maine.10

Elizabeth Wed at Smith Foxcroft Becomes Bride of Murray M Stanhope in Home Ceremony

- DOVER-FOXCROFT July 21— An attractive home wedding was solemnized Saturday evening at 7:30 o'clock when Miss Elizabeth G. Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. Smith of Dover-Foxcroft became the bride of Murray M. Stanhope at the home of the bride groom’s parents Dr. and Mrs. Charles N. Stanhope, South street. The Rev. Heibert R. Livingston, pastor of the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational church read the double ring service. The couple were attended by Miss Barbara Stanhope the bridegroom's only sister, and Cleon Smith the brlde’a onty brother. The ceremony was performed before a bank of greens Interspersed with rod roses with baskets of colorful garden flower used about the living rooms. The bride wore a gown of white mousseline de sole fashioned with square neck and puffed sleeves with a slight train. Her full length veil a family heirloom was caught back with a wreath of orange blossoms and she carried a bridal bouquet of lilies. Her bridesmaid wore white organdy with navy dots and carried an arm bouquet of American beauty roses. The bride’s mother wore pale green crepe with a corsage of talisman roses, while the bridegroom's mother was gowned in black net with red roses. Following the ceremony a buffet lunch was served In the dining room the color scheme of the floral display here being yellow and blue The flower arrangements were in charge of Leslie VanAiken local florist. The bride's cake was made by Mrs. John A. Marsh Miss Effie M. Stanhope presided at the punch bowl. The bride's gift to her bridesmaid was a wide gold link bracelet and the bridegroom's gift to the best man was a leather billfold. The bride was graduated from Foxcrofty academy in the class of 1938 and since graduation has been employed locally. The bridegroom was graduated from Foxcroft academy in 1937 and from the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance in Boston in 1939. Immediately following graduation he accepted a position as accountant for the Dover Motor company. The wedding party included Mr. and Mrs. A Wendell Anderson of New York city, Miss Effie Stanhope of Saugus, Mass., Mr. and Mrs. Forrest B. Marsh of Bangor, Miss June Burrlll of Brewer, Mr. and Mrs. J Eric Love, Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. Smith and son Cleon, John W. Marsh, Mr. and Mrs. John Marsh, Miss Barbara Stanhope and Dr. and Mrs. C. N.      Murray and Elizabeth were The Dover Foxcroft Couples Club celebrated its first anniversary recently with a banquet at the Lancy House in Pittsfield with an attendance of 35 couples. The committee in charge included John and Ella Anderson, chairmen Earl and Blanche Gordon, George and Barbara Howard, Virgil and Dorothy Warren, on 19 April 1947.6

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Murray M. Stanhope, 93, passed away Jan. 30, 2011, comforted by members of his family at Hibbard Nursing Home, Dover-Foxcroft. He was born Jan. 9, 1918, in Portland, the son of Dr. Charles and Maude Stanhope. A longtime resident of Dover-Foxcroft, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout in his youth. He graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 1937 and Bentley College in 1939. While at Bentley college, he attended Red Sox games at the cost of 50 cents and completed his homework as he sat in the bleachers. He saw Ted Williams play his first game at Fenway Park. In 1940 Murray married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth Smith. They celebrated their 68th anniversary in 2008. His wife passed away Jan. 12, 2009. Murray served as master sergeant in the Army during World War II. For 27 years he was employed as an accountant at Dover Motor Co. He also worked as an accountant at Glen's Auto Sales, Corinna, for several years. Murray then served as town clerk and treasurer for Dover-Foxcroft until his retirement. For 21 years he and Elizabeth spent winters in Zephyrhills, Fla., and summers in Dover-Foxcroft and at their camp on Sebec Lake. An active member of the community, Murray served as a member of the board of trustees at Foxcroft Academy for 25 years. He was a past president of Kiwanis Club and a member of Congregational Church, where he served as treasurer. During his spare time, he enjoyed snowmobiling and was a member of Piscataquis Valley Snowmobile Club. On weekends, he and his wife played bridge and other card games with their many friends. For years Murray collected coins and stamps, and played dominoes and cribbage. He is survived by his four children, Betty-Jane Meader and her husband, Dick, of Waterville, Nancy and her husband, Steve, of Stonington and Port St. Lucie, Fla., James and his wife, Laney (Robinson), of Tampa, Fla., and Robert and his wife, Fran (Nelson), of Raymond; and his four grandchildren, Lance Meader and his wife, Amy (Worthley), of Falmouth, Daren Meader and his wife, Jen (Stump), of Gorham, April Smith of Stuart, Fla., and Kevin Stanhope and his wife, Katie (Corbett), of Gray. Murray always smiled when he saw his six great-grandchildren, Drew, Bode, Jace, Jaelyn, Macy and Asher. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Stanhope, formerly of Bangor and Providence, R.I. Special thanks are extended to his primary care giver, Tracy Raymond, who treated him like a family member, and the staff at Hibbard Nursing Home. A graveside service will take place during the summer.
