     Carroll and Myrtie appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Dexter, Penobscot, Maine, enumerated 29 April 1940. Carroll was listed as a laborer in road construction. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $16.26 in the year 2012. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2012 would have cost $.21 cents in 1940.7

Carroll E. Starbird Dies Very Suddenly

- Masonic funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Free Baptist church in Dexter for Carroll E. Starbird, 60. The Rev. Harold Wheeler officiated and the body was placed in the tomb at Mt. Pleasant cemetery to await spring burial. Mr. Starbird died suddenly Friday noon in his truck at his home in North Dexter after having worked in the woods all morning. He was born in Sangerville, May 8, 1888, the son of Abilene and Mary Bailey Starbird. He had been a resident of North Dexter for 19 years. A member of Abner Wade Masonic Lodge No. 207 of Sangerville, he was also a member of North Dexter Grange, the State and National Grange, the Piscataquis Ponoma. He was also a member of Susie Carr Chapter, O. E. S. No. 181, Sangerville. Survivng are his wife, Mrytle Thomas Starbird; five sons, George and Abner of North Dexter, Willard of Sangerville, John and Carroll Eugene of Lake Worth , Fla; one brother, Edwin A. of Sangerville; one sister, Miss Carrie M. Starbird of Washington, D.C., and six grandchildren.8

Obituary

JOHN SULDEN STARBIRD

SANGERVILLE, John Sulden Starbird passed away at his home on August 11, 2002 following a long illness. He was blessed with a loving family who helped care for him throughout his illness. He was born on March 22, 1929 in Sangerville, the fifth son of Myrtie and Carroll Starbird. He attended schools in Dexter, Maine. He held numerous jobs during his life. He spent years as a machinist at Fay Scott, Keyes Fiber, and Cooper Weymouth. He was a long time member of the North Dexter Grange, the Oddfellows, and the Abner Wade Masonic lodge in Sangerville. He enjoyed snowmobiling and was a member and volunteer worker of the Wassookeag Snowmobile Club. He was devoted to his children and proud of their accomplishments. He enjoyed many friends and will be remembered as a good neighbor always ready to lend a helping hand.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores, of Sangerville; three sons, John Jr. and wife Jayne of Arrowsic; Jeffrey and wife Sheila of Dexter, Jere and wife Kathy of Sangerville; stepson Rev. Dr. Richard Hughes of North Haverhill, Mass; stepdaughter Sandra St. Louis and husband Maurice of Abbot; and stepson Daniel Hughes and wife Jackie of Brockton, Mass. He was blessed with eight grandchildren who brought much joy into his life, including a special relationship with grandson Barrett. His latest joy was a great grandson born in July.
Graveside services will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Dexter on Thursday, August 15th at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Abner Wade Lodge, c/o John Greenleaf, Treasurer, P.O. Box 251, Monson, ME 04464. Arrangements are by Crosby & Neal Funeral Home, Guilford.2

BERNICE R COWING

BANGOR — Bernice R. Cowing, 95, wife of the late Leland W. Cowing, died Dec., 2 1995, at a Bangor hospital. She was born in Ellsworth Oct. 28, 1900, the daughter of Fred and Harriet (McGown) Starkey. She was predeceased by a daughter, Harriet Cowing. Mrs. Cowing was a member of Essex Street Baptist Church. She was known to her many generations of family and friends simply as Nannie. Mrs. Cowing will long be remembered for her unique sense of humor and her strong convictions about living a good life. She was especially proud of her lovely home and gardens at 311 Birch St. After her husband's death in 1962 she spent many years as a companion to elderly people caring for them in their homes. Surviving are one daughter, Elizabeth Elias of Bangor; one son Phillip Cowing of Cheshire, Conn; five grandchildren Jacquelyn and her husband Richard Doll of Bangor, John Elias of Bangor, Richard Elias of Portland, Phyllis and her husband Ronald Carusillo of Cheshire, Conn., Leland and his wife Marie Cowing of Union City, Conn; six great-grandchildren Shawn Doll of Camden, Joy Elias of Brewer, John Elias II of Brewer, Kimberly Ballolli of Naugatuck, Conn.l Ronald Carusillo Jr. of Waterbury, Conn., Stephen Carusillo of Lake Plymouth, Conn; five great-great-grandchildren a special sister-in-law, Nettie Starkey of Damariscotta.
