     Clarence Edward Burrill was educated circa 1952.

     Clarence, at age 22, son of William Erwin Burrill and Gladys Marie Osborne, married Betty Lou Kanipe on 24 October 1954 at First Methodist Church, Dallas, North Carolina.3,4

     Clarence Edward Burrill was in the U.S. Marines, in 1952

- We thank Betty Burrill of Dallas, Texas for providing us information about her husband that will be appreciated by his friends and relatives in the area. As a 20-year-old Marine in Korea nearly 50 years ago former Orono resident Clarence “Chuck” Burrill rescued a fellow Marine from behind enemy lines. Wounded twice in the process Burrill’s lieutenant nominated him for the Bronze Star Medal with a combat “V” and two Purple Hearts but Burrill never received the awards. In 1996 according to a story in the Charlotte Observer, Burrill met with his former lieutenant now retired Gen. Jim Day, at their Korean War Recon Company reunion in California. Gen. Day asked Burrill if he ever received the awards. Burrill said no. Again Day submitted the request but as with the previous submission this one apparently was lost somewhere along the line. Burrill finally inquired about the awards himself which resulted in his being presented them during a May 6 ceremony at the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center in Charlotte, N.C. Betty Burrill wrote us that her husband “grew up in Orono and graduated from Orono High in 1951 He was' very active in sports and patriotic so he joined the Marine Corps.” She added that her husband “still has family members and friends in the Bangor, Brewer, Orono, Old Town and Ellsworth area” who now know he has been recognized properly for his heroic deeds during the Korean War. Burrill is retired from Wallace Computer Services Attending the ceremony with him in May were Betty their children, Lisa and Mark and six grandchildren.      DATELINE 14 April 1912: Clifford Loring Burrill was of age to hear of

the event of the RMS Titanic was a British registered four funnelled ocean liner built for the transatlantic passenger and mail service between Southampton and New York.
Constructed at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland Titanic was, on her maiden voyage, the largest vessel afloat.
On April 10th 1912 the Titanic sailed from Southampton with 2,200 passengers and crew. The RMS Titanic's original wireless transmissions, began at 11:55 PM Newfoundland Standard Time [1 1/2 hrs. later than EST, 3 1/2 hrs earlier than Greenwich]. Prior to that time, 8 iceberg warnings were given. Mr. Frederick Fleet was the deck crew member as "Lookout". Shortly after he sighted an iceberg the Titanic collided and started to sink sank. Three hours later, 1500 people died and 700 survived.

The Easter services, which were postponed on account of the storm, were held last Sunday. A fine Easter sermon was given by Herbert Searles. A solo was rendered by Clifford Burrill. The closing piece was Joy to the World, The Lord Has Come, congregation standing. Ethel M. Fogg, organist.
on 19 April 1915.7

     Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this first registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. As World War I continued to escalate, the United States instituted a second draft registration. The second registration was for men who had turned 21 since June 5, 1917, so it added men born between June 5, 1896 and June 5, 1897. Two months later, a supplemental registration was held on August 24, 1918 for men who had become 21 years of age since June 5, 1918, adding the names of men who were born between June 5, 1897 and August 24, 1897. With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted it's third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. This added younger men than the previous registrations, those who were born between September 12, 1897 and September 12, 1900; and added an older group of men, born between September 12, 1873 and September 12, 1888. Clifford filled out a draft card for World War I on 5 June 1917 (at age 28), while living at East Holden, Penobscot, Maine. He was described as tall, medium build, blue eyes, red hair. At the time he was working in farming and clerk on the H. P. Burrill Estate, Dedham, Maine.8

     Clifford and Marion must have been excited for the purchase of a house. The owner (seller) was Ernest McFarland, (widower). It was purchased for $3000.00 dollars. (The passing of Marion in September 1956 and Clifford re-marrying (Edith Pinkham) in June 1958, Clifford left a 'Last Will and Testament', leaving the house to Edith. On June 05 1965, Clifford passed away and on October 20, 1965, Edith sold the house to Earle and Gertrude Stevens) on 28 February 1924.9

     On 3 February 1958, Clifford indicated he was in Florida. Marion has been gone now for a year and a half.
He comments how it seems lonesome, yet, he doesn't mind it too much with all the people around. He had a nice lunch at a nice eating place, then went to the pier for the P. M. program. (Clifford comments,'It's never the same'). He spent half a day looking at boats. Even though they have some nice boats, he says he still likes the one he has. A comment from Clifford, 'Papers say very little snow in Washington county' but, 'They can have this in the summer I will take G.P. (Guard Point) but it is a good place to spend the winter'.10

     Clifford, at age 69, son of Hadley Proctor Burrill and Ella F. Lovejoy, married Edith Marion Pinkham at age 62, daughter of Herbert Leslie Pinkham and Lucia Amina Worthing, on 7 June 1958.11,12

     Clifford left a Will on 13 October 1958 at Brewer, Penobscot, Maine, In part, it reads as follows: ...
'being of lawful age and of sound and disposing mind and memory, but mindful of the uncertainty of this life, do hereby make, publish and declare;
FIRST: bequeath the sum of Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) to my son, Dean C. Burrill.
