ELEANOR B HILL

BANGOR - Eleanor Silsby Burrill Hill, 91, died April 9, 2009 surrounded by family and friends. She was born July 25 1917 in Brewer. Growing up on Poplar Street, Bangor, she attended Mary Snow School the first year it opened. As the oldest of many cousins she enjoyed time in the blueberry fields of Aurora, summers at Guard Point and adventures as a teenager driving a Morris Minor automobile. She graduated from Eastern Maine General Hospital as a registered nurse in 1939 and worked there as an orthopedic supervisor enjoying the company of her uncle Dr. Sam Silsby. She joined the Army in November 1942 and was stationed in North Africa, Tunisia, Italy and Southern France during World War II. She returned to attend the University of Maine in 1946 where she created her own program to graduate with a bachelor's degree in nursing. She married O B Hill in June 1949 after his graduation and moved to Boston while he attended Massachusetts School of Optometry. During that time she was assistant director of nursing at Boston Lying Inn. Having been exposed to natural childbirth she was the first to deliver naturally at Hartford Hospital. At the age of 36 this was her first child, Debbie, and her second child, Sharon, was born five years later. While living in West Hartford, Conn., volunteer work school activities and church were important to her. However her children and family were always her main focus. Summers with her sister's family at Lake Onawa at the foot of Borestone Mountain are among the family's fondest memories. Her husband OB died in 1996, after 47 years of marriage. Her last three years in Bangor at Country Villas were 'the next best thing to home. She was an avid Red Sox fan never missing a game and was one of few to live long enough to see the team win three World Series Championships. Her positive attitude and joy of life will be missed by her daughters, Debbie Hill Hunter and Sharon Hill Shaw her sons-in-law Mark Hunter and David Shaw and her grand- children. Michael and Lauren Hunter and Danielle and Stephen Shaw Family and friends will be invited to a graveside service which will be announced in the spring.
