     Herman Samuel Gray, son of Alexander H. Gray and Lydia J. Saunders, was born on 6 July 1881 at Ellsworth, Hancock, Maine.^2,3

     Herman, at age 24, son of Alexander H. Gray and Lydia J. Saunders, married Bessie Edna Cowing, daughter of Waldo Daniel Cowing and Nellie H. Billington, on 9 November 1905 at Dedham, Hancock, Maine.^4,1

     Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this first registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. As World War I continued to escalate, the United States instituted a second draft registration. The second registration was for men who had turned 21 since June 5, 1917, so it added men born between June 5, 1896 and June 5, 1897. Two months later, a supplemental registration was held on August 24, 1918 for men who had become 21 years of age since June 5, 1918, adding the names of men who were born between June 5, 1897 and August 24, 1897. With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted it's third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. This added younger men than the previous registrations, those who were born between September 12, 1897 and September 12, 1900; and added an older group of men, born between September 12, 1873 and September 12, 1888. Herman filled out a draft card for World War I on 12 September 1918 (at age 37), while living at Monroe, Waldo, Maine. He was employed as farm laborer, for C. M. Conant and described as height, tall and medium build with blue eyes and dark brown hair..²

     Herman Samuel Gray died on 27 June 1962 at Ellsworth, Hancock, Maine, at age 80.⁵ and was buried at Granite Cemetery, Orland, Hancock, Maine.⁶

     Isaac was

reported to have been captured by the barbarous Ottawa Indians at Lake George in 1756, taken to Lake Superior for two years and ransomed at 'a French place, Detroit, by a Frenchman.¹

     Isaac Gray, son of Robert Gray Jr and Miriam Lovejoy, was born in 1709 at Andover, Essex, Massachusetts.¹

     Louisa May Gray, daughter of Herman Samuel Gray and Bessie Edna Cowing, was born on 2 August 1908 at Dedham, Hancock, Maine.^1,2

     Louisa, at age 16, daughter of Herman Samuel Gray and Bessie Edna Cowing, married Byron Herbert Pinkham at age 45 on 12 May 1925 at Maine.³

     Louise Gray, daughter of Benjamin Gray and Mary Stinson Lovejoy, was born circa 1846 at Maine.¹
