John Cook John Cook was a Sergeant in the Revolutionary War. He went to live in Washington County, Maine after the war before 1790.1

John, married Lydia Garnett, daughter of Daniel Garnett Jr. and Hannah Sherman, on 18 April 1793.1

John Cook witnessed travel from Bangor, to Calais, Maine in the 1800's was limited. Some people called one route the "Airline". It was ninty odd miles through the woods, and the shortest way from Bangor to Calais. A stage coach line took the name Airline Stage Route to distinguish it from its competition, shoreline. The Airline route could save travelers almost a day's time. However, the travel took passengers through some wild, unsettled country. There were reports of holdups, attack by wolves to name a few problems. The Airline Stage Route was discontinuined in 1887, when steamboat service entered as competition for travel from Bangor to Calais.2

Lydia Garnett After her husband's death in 1812, Lydia had to raise seven daughters alone. We learn from her pension file that she became destitute and was taken in by various Garnett family members around Dennysville and Pembroke. In 1838 the U S Government passed a law granting certain Revoluntionary War widows half pay and pensions. In 1840, she applied for a pension and was granted one for five years. In 1848, the law was changed and she was able to obtain a pension for life. She received $120.00 per annum. In 1855, two years before her death she was able to apply for bounty land under a new Act of Congress.
