Obituary

DIED - In this town [Amherst NH], 16th inst. Mr. Jonathan Lovejoy, jun. aged 39; son of Mr. Jonathan Lovejoy. This young man possessed a good understanding, an amiable disposition, and an excellent character. He seemed to seek those things, which make for peace, and at an early period of his life became hopefully pious professing his faith in Jesus. But not till he had become sorely afflicted. At about 15 years of age, he was attacked with a violent headache, which resisted all medical aid. And ere long deprived him of his eye-sight, and in a great measure of his health; so that for more than 20 years he had been totally blind. During this long period he was subject to almost continual suffering, and to unusual pains in his head, which he bore with a christian fortitude and patience highly worthy of imitation. His death was sudden, and occasioned by the disease in his head. He was apparently as well as usual the evening previous. In the night of the 15th, he was taken violently, and suffered extremely with pain in his head, which terminated his existence between 3 & 4 o'clk. next day. But he is now free from all his sufferings; and those who best know him, particularly his parents, and his surviving brothers and sisters, have this blessed, this cheering consolation, that he sleeps in Jesus. On examination of his brain by the physician, after death, the optic nerves were found in a diseased state, and much disease in other parts of the brain, sufficient to account for his blindness, and long, severe sufferings.
