     Nelson N. Scales was born on 17 September 1888 at Guilford, Piscataquis, Maine.1

     Nelson, at age 24, married Florence Marion Pratt at age 36, daughter of Charles W. Pratt and Frances J. Garland, on 31 July 1913.2

     Nelson died on 4 April 1966 at Bangor, Penobscot, Maine, at age 77.1 and was buried at Elmwood Cemetery, Milo, Piscataquis, Maine.3

     Nelson and Florence appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Guilford, Piscataquis, Maine, enumerated 2 January 1920. He was listed as a commercial farmer and into clothing. Her sons, Hugo Silas and Donald Harvey were listed as living with them.4

Noted Guilford Businessman Dead At 77

GUILFORD - Nelson Scales, 77, well known Guilford businessman died Monday at Bangor after a long Illness. He was born here Sept. 17, 1888, son of Charles and Adaline Scales. He graduated from Guilford High School in 1907 and from the University of Maine in 1911. Mr. Scales was regional salesman for the Saranac Glove Co. and for Carter and Churchill Co. both of New Hampshire for many years. He owned and operated the Braebum Hotel in Guilford for 30 years and was part owner of H. Douglass and Co. of Guilford. He owned and operated the Kineo View Hotel in Rockwood for 25 yesrs. He was a Republican and served as county commissioner in Piscataquis County. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a Shriner and a member of the First Universalist Church here. His wife, the former Florence Pratt Cross of Dover Foxcroft, died in 1955. He is survived by two stepsons, Hugo Cross of Guilford and Donald Cross of Pottstown, PA. Funeral services will be held at the Crosby Neal Funeral Home here Thursday at 2 pm the Rev. Warren Hedrick officiating. Burial will be In Elmwood Cemetery. Friends msy call at the funeral home Tuesday and Wednesday from 3-5 and 7-9 pm.5
