Obituary

Obituary of James Alvin Stanhope

Dover-Foxcroft and Tampa, FL - James Alvin Stanhope, lovingly known as Jim or Jamie to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025, in Tampa, Florida, at the age of 74. Born on August 28, 1950, in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, James grew up with a keen interest in music. Through high school he played saxophone for the Foxcroft Academy school and dance bands and guitar/electric organ for his rock band, Misty Soul, for which he also sang. James proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1970 to 1974 when his time in the military instilled in him a strong sense of discipline and dedication - values he demonstrated throughout his life. He pursued higher education, earning associate degrees from both EMVTI and Thomas College, and embarked on a career as an electronics engineer – including 30+ years with Hathaway Shirt Company in Waterville, Maine. His work reflected his meticulous nature and problem-solving skills, qualities that served him well throughout his life as an amazing provider for his family. Beyond his professional and military endeavors, James found joy in simple pleasures such as listening to doo-wop music on his headphones, which never failed to relax him, or spending time at his family’s camp on Sebec Lake. He had a love for building models, carefully crafting intricate pieces with patience and precision. Watching sports was another favorite pastime; he rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on his teams. Those who knew him best will fondly remember his ever-present dry sense of humor; he was always quick with a dad joke, bringing smiles to those around him. Predeceased by his parents, Murray Marsh Stanhope and Elizabeth Smith Stanhope, James is survived by his beloved wife of 53+ years, Elaine "Laney" Stanhope of Tampa, Florida; his son, Kevin J. Stanhope of Gray, Maine; Kevin’s fiancée, Stephanie Roy; and their children, Asher Stanhope and Kullen Roy. He is also survived by his siblings: Betty-Jane Meader of Waterville, Maine (preceded in death by her husband Dick Meader), Nancy Smith of Port St. Lucie, Florida (with her husband Steve Smith), and Robert Stanhope of Raymond, Maine (with his wife Fran Nelson Stanhope). Additionally, he leaves behind eight nieces and nephews, fourteen great-nieces and great-nephews, and many cherished in-laws. James’ legacy lives on through the laughter he shared and the memories he created with family and friends. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. A graveside service will be held this summer in the family lot of the Dover Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.
