Marie Oberg, wife of Oscar G. Meyer
Marie Oberg, daughter of Mann Emanuel Oberg and Engebaar A. Johnson, was born on 27 September 1915 at Iron River, Iron, Michigan.1,2

Marie, at age 26, married Oscar Gustaf Meyer at age 33 on 6 November 1941.3

Marie Oberg died at age 93, on 23 January 2009, at St. Mary's Care Center, Madison, Wisconsin.2

     Marie's obituary read as follows:
VERONA - S. Marie Meyer, age 93, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at St. Mary's Care Center in Madison. She was born Sept. 27, 1915, in Iron River, located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, to Engebaar and Mann Oberg, whose families had immigrated from Scandinavia. The oldest of three children, Marie graduated from Iron River High School in 1933 and attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan where she completed her bachelor's degree in education in 1937. Marie began her education career in 1938 as an elementary teacher in Edwardsburg, Mich. In 1939, she moved to Jefferson, where she continued to teach grade school, sending most of her earnings home to help support her two younger brothers through college. While attending summer school at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1939, Marie met a childhood acquaintance, Oscar Meyer, who was a Captain in the U.S. Army and one of Verona's earliest residents, his parents having moved there shortly after his birth. The two were married on Nov. 6, 1941 and Marie took a break from teaching to raise a family.
In 1947 the family moved to Rio, where Oscar had accepted a position as administrator of the Rio Public Schools, a position he held for nearly two decades. In 1953, Marie returned to her education career as an elementary teacher specializing in reading with the Portage School system, where she remained for over ten years. During this time she also earned a master's degree in education from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Marie and Oscar retired to Verona in 1969 but missed kids, school, and teaching. Marie returned to the classroom as a middle school teacher with the Verona Public Schools where she remained until her final retirement in 1982. During her late teaching years she also cared for her invalid mother in her home.
A fun-loving person with a great spirit for life, Marie was devoted to protecting and supporting her family. She shunned the spotlight or public displays, but her integrity and her ability to love deeply were a magnet to friends and a gift to her family. She was a skilled and talented seamstress, a doting grandmother, a gifted educator, and a sensitive, caring partner and parent. She was also a person of deep faith and tremendous strength and personal courage, who never ran from life's challenges. In this world or the life that lies beyond, one could not hope for finer company.
Marie is survived by her brother, William Oberg of Falls Church, Va; and her two children, James Meyer of Prairie du Sac and Marsha Meyer of Chicago, Ill. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Tracy and Matthew Meyer and twins Jaimie and Stephanie Meyer; a niece, Sandra (Tom) Porter of Fairfax, Va; a great-niece, Ashleigh Porter; and three great-nephews, Shawn, Nathan, and Marshall Porter. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Oscar Meyer; and a brother, Marshall Oberg, who died in World War II.
Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, in the chapel of ST. MARY'S CARE CENTER, 3401 Maple Drive, just off Highway 18 and 151 (Verona Road), Madison. St. Mary's Chaplin Kim Beuerman and the Reverend Marshall Norman will officiate. Friends may call at St. Mary's Chapel starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Refreshments will be served following the service. Ryan Funeral Home and Cremation Services 5701 Odana Road (608) 274-1000

Nels Emil Ahlin1

M, b. 14 May 1873, d. 8 January 1940
Nels Emil Ahlin was born on 14 May 1873 at Sverige.2

Nels, at age 42, married Carolina Boqvist at age 41, daughter of Nils Bokvist and Kajsa Svensdotter, on 7 February 1916 at Snohomish, Washington.3

Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this first registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. As World War I continued to escalate, the United States instituted a second draft registration. The second registration was for men who had turned 21 since June 5, 1917, so it added men born between June 5, 1896 and June 5, 1897. Two months later, a supplemental registration was held on August 24, 1918 for men who had become 21 years of age since June 5, 1918, adding the names of men who were born between June 5, 1897 and August 24, 1897. With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted it's third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. This added younger men than the previous registrations, those who were born between September 12, 1897 and September 12, 1900; and added an older group of men, born between September 12, 1873 and September 12, 1888. Nels filled out a draft card for World War I on 21 September 1918 (at age 45), while living at 361 Garfield Street, Seattle, King, Washington. He was employed as gas engineer and described as height, medium and stout build with blue eyes and black hair. It was noted, "Only two fingers on right hand".1
