Obituary

OBITUARY

The many friends of Lewis M. Blood of East Bucksport, learned with sorrow of his death which occurred at 5 oclock Sunday morning, April 9, at his home, after an illness of four weeks from Capillary bronchitis. His age was 66 years, eight months and 22 days. He was born July 17, 1849, the son of Alfred and Mary (Bowden) Blood, and one of a family of four sons and six daughters, three of whom survive him, Mrs. Emeline Farnham of Vera Cruz, Henry Biood of San Francisco, and Mrs. Joshua Little, of East Bucksport, who with her husband had been spending the winter in California, and were on their way home, but were unable to reach here in time for the funeral. When Mr. Blood was sixteen years old his father died and he became the mainstay of the family, relinquishing a desire to go west, with others of his age, who went at that time, and his life was one of devotion and sacrifice to those nearest to him. Mr. Blood was twice married, his first wife being Miss Mary Hubbard of East Bucksport, who lived but a few years and died leaving one son, Byron, who grew to manhood and whose death occurred in 1903 at the age of 32 years. ' In January, 1880, Mr. Blood was united in marriage to Miss Marcia Burrill of Dedham who survives him, and who faithfully ministered to him in his illness, and is now left alone in the home where they had lived 36 years. In her loneliness she has the sympathy of many friends. He was a prosperous and enterprising farmer, having carried on a large farm from his boyhood and by his untiring industry and good management was successful. He was a public spirited citizen and held in high regard for his integrity and honor as a friend and neighbor. In all business transactions his word was as good as his bond. In politics he was a staunch Republican. He was active in the interests of the Methodist church where he was a regular attendant. He was a prominent reader, possessed of a retentive memory and gifted as a speaker, he was often heard with interest on the various questions and topics of the day. In the neighborhood where he always lived, he was held iu high esteem as was attested by the kindness s and attention shown him during his illness and the sorrow at his death. Although appreciated by many outside his own family, his real worth was known only to his family and most intimate friends. Funeral services were held at the residence Tuesday afternoon attended by sympathizing relatives, neighbors, and friends. Rev. Oscar Smith of the First Methodost church of Bangor; a former pastor, spoke words of comfort, taking for his theme, What is Life? That this life with its joys and sorrows, hopes and fears cares and labors was but a preparation for the higher and fuller life beyond, where our reward awaits us, and where the mists are cleared away, when "We shall know as we are known, Never more to walk alone." He made a touching prayer, full of sympathy and consolation. Clifford Burrill sang with feeling, end he was accompanied by Marcia Burrill. The flora tributes were beautiful, consisting of a design of liles and pinks from the relatives and a basket of red carnations from the grange. Arrangements were in charge of J. E. Huggard. The bearers were four neighbors, Harold. Leslie, and Clifford Burrill and Stephen Little. Interment was in the family lot at Hillside cemetery, East Bucksport.8
