George Albert Mulvaney1,2

M, b. 7 August 1880, d. 18 June 1962
George Albert Mulvaney, son of James D. Mulvaney, was born on 7 August 1880 at Bangor, Penobscot, Maine.1,2

Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this first registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. As World War I continued to escalate, the United States instituted a second draft registration. The second registration was for men who had turned 21 since June 5, 1917, so it added men born between June 5, 1896 and June 5, 1897. Two months later, a supplemental registration was held on August 24, 1918 for men who had become 21 years of age since June 5, 1918, adding the names of men who were born between June 5, 1897 and August 24, 1897. With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted it's third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. This added younger men than the previous registrations, those who were born between September 12, 1897 and September 12, 1900; and added an older group of men, born between September 12, 1873 and September 12, 1888. George filled out a draft card for World War I on 12 September 1917 (at age 37), while living at 288 Clermont Avenue, Brooklyn, Kings, New York. He was employed as sailmaker forE. L. Stewart Company and described as height, tall and medium build with brown eyes and black hair..3

George, at age 37, married Annie Maud Huskins on 16 February 1918 at Manhattan, New York, New York.4

George Albert Mulvaney lived in 1928 at New Bedford, Massachusetts.5

The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Just about a year before that, in October 1940, President Roosevelt had signed into law the first peacetime selective service draft in U.S. history, due to rising world conflicts. After the U.S. entered WWII a new selective service act required that all men between ages 18 and 65 register for the draft. Between November 1940 and October 1946, over 10 million American men were registered. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the "old man's registration", was conducted on 27 April 1942 and registered men who born on or between 28 April 1877 and 16 February 1897 - men who were between 45 and 64 years old - and who were not already in the military. George filled out a draft card for World War II on 25 April 1942 (at age 61), while living at 522 Florida Street, Vallejo, California. He was working at the Navy Yard at Mare Island.2

George Albert Mulvaney died at age 81, on 18 June 1962, at Portland, Maine.6

Census

George Albert Mulvaney appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Bangor, Penobscot, Maine in the household of his father, James and step-mother, Rose.7

George and Annie appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Brooklyn, Kings, New York, enumerated January 1920. George was working as a boat sailmaker.8

George appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Brooklyn, Kings, New York, at Park Place, enumerated 12 April 1930. George was listed as a boarder, working for a canvas products company as a sailmaker.9

George and Annie appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Vallejo, California, enumerated 11 April 1940. George was working at the U. S. Navy yard as a sailmaker. He was renting, paying $30.00 a month. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $16.26 in the year 2012. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2012 would have cost $.21 cents in 1940.10

M, b. 17 March 1897
Percy Billington, son of Edward R. Billington and Bertha M. Chase, was born on 17 March 1897 at Dixmont, Penobscot, Maine.1,3

Percy filled out a draft card for World War I on 5 June 1918 (at age 21), while living at Monroe, New York. He was employed as a farmer, working for Charles Mitchell and described as height, tall and medium build with hazel eyes and dark brown hair..4
