Obituary

It was then known as 'Jones Plantation', now China (Maine), on the east side of the Lake. Mr. Burrill served as Town Clerk for one year in China and five years in Albion. He was in the War of 1812 and was entitled, under the last pension act, to a pension. He moved from China to Albion in 1830, residing there til 1868, removing to China Village and remained there til his death. He was on the Board of Selectmen in Albion for eighteen years, and was chairman of the board foe seventeen years. He was town agent for one year. He was postmaster at South Albion for twenty-three years and in his absence from home the duties of the office were satisfactorily performed by his wife. Mr. Burrill was twice elected a member of the House of Representatives of Maine and also served as Senator for Kennebec County in 1856. He held a commission as Justice of the Peace for forty-two years. By virtue of this office he joined in matrimony eighty-seven couples. He also took charge of one hundred fifteen funerals. He served on jury five times. He was Supt. of School Committee eighteen years and taught eleven public schools and five singing schools. It will thus be seen that Mr. Burrill was largely engaged in public affairs and every duty was faithfully and consciously performed to the acceptance of his constituents. In 1870, when he was seventy-five years old, Mr. Burrill wrote a history of Central Lodge, F. A. M., of which he was an honorary member, also wrote during his life a large amount of fragmentary history of the settlement of the town of China, a portion of which is now in print. Mr. B(urrill) was twice married; his first wife was Sarah Harlow, second was Abra L. Washburn, daughter of J. C. Washburn, Esq., one of the early and honored settlers of China. His three children have all died, and his widow is alone left. With her he lived for fifty-six years. His last sickness was long, being confined to his bed for over two and a half years, but was borne with the utmost patience. When the release came it found him ready. His memory is sweet to us.11

In 1774 a family named Clark settled in the area and established Jones' Plantation. In 1796 Jones' Plantation was incorporated as Harlem. On June 25, 1818 the Town of China was incorporated by combining Harlem, Fairfax (Albion), and Winslow.
The name of the town was chosen by Japheth Washburn. He wanted to call the town Bloomville, but people from the town of Bloomfield objecting, saying that the similarity of names could cause confusion. Mr. Washburn settled on the name China, because it was the name of one of his favorite hymn tunes (better known as 'Jesus Loves Me').
