Obituary

DEDHAM The sad news has been received of the death of Alfred Condon, a former resident of Dedham, which occurred at West Surry, Saturday, May 9, after a brief Illness at the age of 77 years. He was born in Brookavllle the oldest son of James and Abra (Burrill) Condon, and was one of twelve children. When a small boy his parents moved to Dedham, his mother's native town, where he lived the greater part of his life. He was a farmer by occupation, and his home since his marriage was in the Phillips Lake district. A few years ago he sold his farm and moved to the home of his adopted daughter Mrs. Edith Cunningham, at West Surry, where he had since resided. He was very active and industrious and since the death of his son-in-law a few years ago, had carried on the place. He was an enterprising and public spirited citizen, always interested in the welfare and betterment of his town. Mr. Condon had served in Dedham as first, second, and third selectman between 25 and 55” years, serving as second for a long period and was a co-worker with his cousin, the late Hadley P. Burrill. He was well informed on the various topics of the day, well versed in points of law, and able to give counsel and advice in such matters. Mr. Condon made a profession of religion a number of years ago and although living some distance from church privileges was present whenever possible. Mr. Condon and bis wife were prominent members of New Century Grange and greatly enjoyed its meetings. He was in his younger years a fine singer and always sang with the spirit and understanding. He was intensely patriotic having been a soldier in tbe Civil war where he served four years In the 19th Maine Regt and was in many battles, one being at Antietam. He was an honored members of the Walter L. Parker Post G .A.R. of Dedham, and had held the office of adjutant every year but one when he served as commander. He was always present at the Memorial services, and had planned to be here this year, but it was not so to be, and the sad fact remains that his place in the years to come will be vacant. Down through the years as they roll on Our heroes die those noble sons; All battle scarred from victories won They gather homeward one by one Their glorious deeds we tell with pride Though thousands in the conflict died Thy saved our Union none denied best sweetly rest. Mr. Condon leaves to mourn his loss a wife, who was Miss Fannie Baker of Orrlngton; an adopted daughter, Mrs. Edith Cunningham, and two grandchildren; also two sisters, Mrs. Arvesta Burrill, of Dedham, Mrs. Rose Jordan, of Colebrook, N. H; and two brothers J. Pearl Condon, of Allston, Mass., and James 3. Condon Of Island Pond, Vt. The funeral was held Tuesday, May 11, at West Surry, Rev. T. S. Ross of the M. E. church Ellsworth officiating The burial was at Surry .12
