     Marcia Davis was born on 2 October 1907 at Machiasport, Washington, Maine.2,3

     Marcia, at age 25, married Seymour Mariner Harris at age 37, son of Alfred Harris and Rebecca MacDonald, on 20 March 1933.4

     Marcia died on 11 November 1989 at Machias, Washington, Maine, at age 82.5 and was buried at Longfellow Cemetery, Machias, Washington, Maine.6

     Marcia and Seymour appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Machias, Washington, Maine, enumerated 3 April 1940. Seymour was listed as a peddler of household goods. He was renting at the time, $10.00 per month. He worked a total of four weeks in 1939. The census indicated he completed four years high school. Lillian M. Gay, step daughter, was in the home. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $16.26 in the year 2012. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2012 would have cost $.21 cents in 1940.7

MACHIAS — Marcia E. Harris, 62, died Nov. 11, 1989 at a Machias hospital. She was born at Machlasport Oct. 2, 1907, the daughter of George F. and Hattie M. (Hooper) Davis. She is survived by one daughter, Lillian Gray of Marshfield; one sister, Mildred Pettegrew of East Machias; three grandchildren Mary Mallory, Annette Wilcox, and Parley Gray, 12 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. By request there will be no calling hours. A graveside committal service will be held at Longfellow Cemetery at a later date. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Down East Community Hospital, Machias. Arrangements by Gardner-Hall Funeral Home.3

Marion E. Davis, wife of Clifford L. Burrill
     Marion Elizabeth Davis, daughter of Alfonso Seth Davis and Jennie L. Smith, was born on 14 March 1890 at Wellington, Piscataquis, Maine.1,2

     According to the Wellington annual town report for for 1907, Marion received tuition for scholar’s payment from the town for Maine Central Institute.3

     Marion Elizabeth Davis is in this photograph with Alfonso and Jennie and Horace S. Smith and Marcia C. Smith, which was taken circa 1910 This photograph was not dated, however, it is assumed to have been taken about 1910.4

     The Town of Wellington report, for the year ending February 20, 1912, indicated, Marion was paid a sum of sixty three dollars for her prior Spring term teaching wages before August 1911.5

     Marion and Clifford Loring Burrill filed a marriage intention on 2 August 1911 at Wellington, Piscataquis, Maine.6

     Marion, at age 21, daughter of Alfonso Seth Davis and Jennie L. Smith, married Clifford Loring Burrill at age 22, son of Hadley Proctor Burrill and Ella F. Lovejoy, on 22 August 1911 at Wellington, Piscataquis, Maine.7

     On 31 December 1911 Jennie sent a letter to Marion. In this letter she discusses the weather and Marcia's health.8

     On 10 January 1912 Horace sent a letter to Marion. Written on "Postal" stationary, Horace is telling Marion of his reassignment to a different post office. He expresses his disappointment, yet is glad he has a government job. Horace comments on a visit to Harmony, and his thoughts on Marcia's health.8

     On 21 January 1912 Horace sent a letter to Marion. Horace, is now in New York City. It will be just one month and 20 days before his death.8

     On 17 February 1912 Marcia sent a post card to Marion. Marcia's comments seem to indicate Marion is by herself for a night. She also says Mama (Jennie) received a Valentine from Uncle Joe. (Uncle Joe was probably Joseph Smith). Marcia seems to be having a digestive problem. She tells Marion of having to take a malted milk and the following day trying a baked potato. She commented about Josie (Davis) visiting.8

     DATELINE 14 April 1912: Marion Elizabeth Davis was of age to hear of

the event of the RMS Titanic was a British registered four funnelled ocean liner built for the transatlantic passenger and mail service between Southampton and New York.
Constructed at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland Titanic was, on her maiden voyage, the largest vessel afloat.
On April 10th 1912 the Titanic sailed from Southampton with 2,200 passengers and crew. The RMS Titanic's original wireless transmissions, began at 11:55 PM Newfoundland Standard Time [1 1/2 hrs. later than EST, 3 1/2 hrs earlier than Greenwich]. Prior to that time, 8 iceberg warnings were given. Mr. Frederick Fleet was the deck crew member as "Lookout". Shortly after he sighted an iceberg the Titanic collided and started to sink sank. Three hours later, 1500 people died and 700 survived.


     On 31 May 1912 Marion sent a letter to Jennie. The vertical writing reads on page 5 is as follows:
"Aunt Hannah is up to Franks but she can't come up here she is in such bad shape she has failed so much since she come that Charlie is coming up to take her back. Grammie went down to see her yesterday she is losing her mind dreadfully got up yesterday morning and put her corsets on outside of her dress and had her teeth in upside down. I pity her so.”.8

     On 23 June 1912 Jennie sent a letter to Marion. The letter discusses how the garden's are doing,a proposed meeting in Bangor and a comment about Clifford's injured finger.8

     On 9 July 1912 Jennie sent a letter to Marion. Jennie is expressing how hot it is there. And, of course, its just the time to be haying. The lack of rain is making so many things dry but humid.8

     On 11 July 1912 Jennie sent a post card to Marion. Jennie gives Marion a little guidance on planting cucumber plants.8

     On 24 August 1912 Jennie sent a letter to Marion. Jennie comments on her return trip to Harmony. She expresses how the place was kept while she was gone. Jennie expresses her feelings of the toll last spring. Jennie has been looking through a book Horace made. You can feel the sadness within Jennie.8

     On 30 September 1912 Jennie sent a letter to Marion. In this letter, Jennie talks about a trip over the mountain that was cancelled. Also the health of several visitors.9

     On 4 October 1912 Jennie sent a letter to Marion. In this letter, Jennie is discussing her trip to Dexter to get some cola syrup to make sweet pickles. She also expresses she isn't feeling very well and that Lizzie has now left for the winter. Lizzie was a great help for Jennie this past summer.9

     Marion was undergoing an operation by Dr. Peters of Bangor. She had sprained the ligaments of her knee several weeks before. The doctor straightened and placed it in a cast. Although suffering considerable pain, she was reported as improving. on 16 March 1916 at Dedham, Hancock, Maine.10

     Marion and Clifford must have been excited for the purchase of a house. The owner (seller) was Ernest McFarland, (widower). It was purchased for $3000.00 dollars. (The passing of Marion in September 1956 and Clifford re-marrying (Edith Pinkham) in June 1958, Clifford left a 'Last Will and Testament', leaving the house to Edith. On June 05 1965, Clifford passed away and on October 20, 1965, Edith sold the house to Earle and Gertrude Stevens) on 28 February 1924.11

     Marion left a Will on 22 January 1948 at Brewer, Penobscot, Maine, The original 'Will' reads, in part,
'After payment of my just debts, funeral charges and expenses of administration, I dispose of my estate as follows:
FIRST: I give to my son Dean C. Burrill, the sum of five hundred dollars ($500.00).
SECOND: I give to my daughter June Elizabeth Burrill the sum of five hundred dollars $500.00 and a diamond ring.
THIRD: I give to my daughter, Phyllis Marion Burrill, five hundred dollars ($500.00) and a diamond ring.
FORTH: I give and devise to my husband Clifford L. Burrill all my interest in the real estate jointly owned by us, situate at Number 22 School Street in said Brewer to have and to hold to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
FIFTH: I give, bequeath and devise to my said husband, Clifford L. Burrill all the rest, reesidue and remainder of my estate, real, personal and mixed, wherever situated and however and whenever acquired, to have and to hold to him and his heirs and assigns forever. The foregoing provisions in favor of my said husband to be in full for all his right of dower, right by descent, right to claim an allowance, right to a distributive share, and all other rights under the laws of Maine in and to all my estate, real, personal and mixed.
SIXTH: I hereby nominate my said husband, Clifford L. Burrill, Executor of this my last Will and Testament and request that he shall not be required any bond in that capacity.
In Testimony Whereof, I hereunto set my hand and seal, and declare this my last Will and Testament, this twenty-second day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and forty-eight. Marion Elizabeth Burrill.12


     Marion died on 27 September 1956 at Bangor, Penobscot, Maine, at age 66.13 and was buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor, Penobscot, Maine.14

     Marion Elizabeth Davis, and her parents appeared on the 1900 Federal Census in Wellington, Piscataquis, Maine in the household of her grandparents, Edward Davis and Abagail.15

     Marion appeared on the 1910 Federal Census in Wellington, Piscataquis, Maine in the household of her parents, Alfonso and Jennie.16

     Marion and Clifford appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Dedham, Hancock, Maine, enumerated 30 January 1920. Clifford's occupation was a retail merchant in a grocery store. He owned his home indentified as a farm. Their children, Dean Clifford and June Elizabeth were listed as living with them.17

     Marion and Clifford appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Brewer, Penobscot, Maine, at 32 School Street, enumerated 8 April 1930. It showed they owned a home valued at $6000.00 and, they had a radio in the house. Clifford's line of work was listed as a manager of a grain company. Their children, Dean Clifford, June Elizabeth and Phyllis Marion were listed as living with them.18

     Marion and Clifford appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Brewer, Penobscot, Maine, at 32 School Street, enumerated 9 April 1940. Clifford owned his home, valued at $6000.00. He completed 4 years high school. He was working as a salesman for a grain company. For the past year, he worked fifty-two weeks with a $3348.00 earning. Their daughter, Phyllis Marion was listed as living with them. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $16.26 in the year 2012. The death of Mrs. Marion E. Burrill occurred Thursday morning at a local hospital after a brief illness.
She was born in Harmony in 1890, the daughter of Alfonso and Jennie (Smith) Davis and spent her early years there. She was graduated from Maine Central Institute, Pittsfield, in 1909, and taught school until her marriage to Clifford L. Burrill of Dedham. In 1920, they came to Brewer to make their home, residing at 22 School Street.
A member of the First Congregational Church, she was very active in the King's Daughters Circle of the church, the Parish Circle, the Homemaker's group and the Missionary group. She was also a member of the Women's M. P. M. Literary Club.
Surviving besides her husband, are a son, Dean C. of Ottawa, Ontario; two daughters, Mrs. Cleon M. Smith of Dover Foxcroft and Mrs. Lester F. Whitney of Brattleboro, Vt., and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the First Congregational Church, Brewer, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
Friends may call at the Clark-Mitchell Funeral Home, 55 South Main Street, Brewer, this afternoon between 2 and 4 o'clock and this evening between 7 and 9 o'clock.20
