     James A. Smith, son of John Smith and Elizabeth Blackwood, was born circa 1841 at Edmunds, Washington, Maine.1,2

     James, son of John Smith and Elizabeth Blackwood, married Mary E. Sprague, daughter of James Sprague and Abigail Clarke, circa 1864.3

     James was 'Master of Sail Vessels of Over 700 Gross Tons', allowing him to sail in any ocean, on 17 April 1900.4

     James A. Smith died on 11 July 1902 at Willmington, North Carolina,5,6 and was buried at Court Street Cemetery, Machias, Washington, Maine.7

Mitchell and Corrilla Nickerson Blackwood, his aunt, along with his brother Sanford and his mother, Elizabeth (Blackwood) Smith. It is possible, the family needed a place to live, therefore Ira took them in since Corrilla and Elizabeth were sisters.9

     James and Mary appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Machiasport, Washington, Maine, enumerated 7 July 1870. James was listed as a master mariner. His real estate valued at $500.00 Their children, Salome Arlett and Vesta F. were listed as living with them.10

     James A. Smith, his wife Mary and their four children appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Machiasport, Washington, Maine, in the household of Mary's parents, James Sprague and Abigail. He was listed as a sailor.11

     James and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Machias, Washington, Maine, enumerated, 5 June 1900. James was working as a sea captian.. Their children, Vivian A. were listed as living with them.12
