Ernest Washington Burrill, husband of Mary E. Maddocks
     Ernest Washington Burrill, son of Asa Coombs Burrill and Nancy Emily Blaisdell, was born on 7 May 1866 at Dedham, Hancock, Maine.1,2

     Ernest and Mary E. Maddocks filed a marriage intention on 26 January 1892 at Dedham, Hancock, Maine.3

     Ernest, at age 25, son of Asa Coombs Burrill and Nancy Emily Blaisdell, married Mary E. Maddocks, daughter of Ezakiel W. Maddocks and Elizabeth Saunders, on 30 January 1892, at Dedham, Hancock, Maine, By the Rev. George F Bradford, Minister of the Gospel, Dedham, Maine. Ernest was working as a resturant keeper and Mary a school teacher.4,5,6,7,8

     Ernest was listed as holding position of School Committee Superintendent, circa 1896, at Dedham, Hancock, Maine.9

     Ernest Washington Burrill was educated circa 1900; Ernest was educated in public schools in Dedham and Castine Normal School. His grandfather and father had worked a farm in Dedham and later was inherited by Ernest. It was prosperous with six to eight cattle, two work horses and a driving horse as well as farm equipment.10

     DATELINE 3 December 1926: Ernest and Mary were in a very bad accident. They were driving to Dedham village with a horse and top buggy, and when at a short distance from the town hall, the harness broke, frightening the horse which ran, and Mr. Burrill finding he could not stop him, succeeded in reining him in at the yard of the Grange stable, overturning the carriage and throwing them out. Mr. Burrill sustained a severe scalp wound. Mrs. Burrill suffered a bad shaking up and shock, while Mrs. Black, who was the most severely injured, had her nose broken and her face cut. Fortunately they were near the George Hopkins place where they were cared for until a physician, Dr. L. H. Ford, of Bangor, could reach them, who gave first aid, after which they were carried to E. M. G. hospital, where their injuries were attended to and the report, Saturday morning was that they were as comfortable as could be expected at Dedham, Hancock, Maine.11

     Ernest died on 23 January 1928, at Dedham, Hancock, Maine, at age 61. Ernest's cause of death was listed as accidental shooting. (He was killed accidently Jan. 23 1928 while walking from the house to the barn with a rifle in one hand with the purpose of shooting a hog. He fell on the ice, the rifle discharging and the bullet had entered under the right jaw and out the center of his forehead)..5,6 He was buried at Union Cemetery, Dedham, Hancock, Maine.12

     Ernest left a Will on 3 February 1928, at Dedham, Hancock, Maine. Ernest died intestate. The documents indicated Ernest's total property did not exceed $9500.00. There were three sisters, one brother, three nephews and a niece listed as heirs-at-law and next of kin. Ernest's wife Mary was the 'Administratrix'. Total real and personal estate came to a total of $18675.24. The paperwork started to be filed on 03 February 1928.13

     Ernest appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Dedham, Hancock, Maine, in the household of his parents, Asa and Nancy.14

     Ernest Washington Burrill appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Dedham, Hancock, Maine in the household of his parents, Asa and Nancy.15

     Ernest and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Dedham, Hancock, Maine, enumerated 4 June 1900. He listed his occupation as a farmer. Ernest Washington's, mother, Nancy Emily was listed as living with them.16

     Ernest and Mary appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Dedham, Hancock, Maine, enumerated 31 January 1920. Ernest was working as a farmer, on his farm that was free of mortgage.17

OBITUARY

- The sudden passing of Ernest W. Burrill of Dedham early Monday morning, January 23, 1928, was a great shock to his family and a large circle of frelnds, who cannot yet realize that the life of one who a few hours before, was in hls usual mental and physical health, mingling with his friends and attending to his general business had come to a close. His age was 61 years, 8 months, and 16 days. He was the son of the late Asa C. and Nancy E. (BIaisdell) Burrill, and one of a family of four sons, and five daughters, eight of whom lived to manhood and womanhood. Mr. Burrill was educated in the public schools of this town and Castlne Normal School and had some experience in teaching. He had always lived Ii Dedham on the homestead with the exception of about two years when he was engaged in the hotel business with his brother, in Ashland, Wisconsin. On January 30, 1892, he was united In marriage to Miss Mary K. Maddocks of East Bucksport, who survives him and is left alone in the home and who has the sincere sympathy of many friends in her sudden bereavement. Members of his immediate family, who survives him are, Mrs. Emma Fogg of East Bucksport, Mrs. Marcia Blood of Dedham, Mrs. Nellie Turner of Brewer, who is spending the winter in Kalamazoo, Mich., and Walter K. Burrill of Detriot, Michigan. "Hail and farewell through golden sunsets glowing Brave as of old, thy ship puts forth to sea We stand upon the shore to watch thy going We who were one of your ship's company Master of many a strong and splendid semblance When shall we find another like to thee" Mr. Burrill was a prosperous and enterprising farmer, carrying on a large farm and by his untiring industry and good management was successful. He will be greatly missed in the Congregational church where he was a regular attendant and loyal supporter. He was interested and well informed in civic affairs. He had held nearly every position of trust in the town serving as treasurer and collector 20 years, also as selectman and superintendent of schools, being a member of the school board at the time of his death Mr. Burrill was a charter member of New Century grange and had held the office of treasurer 18 years. He was a ready speaker and was always called upon in discussion of topics in both Pomona and stibordinate grange meeting, and had held the office of Worthy Master in both. He was a member of Wlldey lodge I O O F of Brewer. He waa a devoted husband, a loving father, a kind neighbor, an upright and useful citizen and his death leaves a void which cannot be filled. He will be greatly missed, in his home and town, he being the last one of the third generation to live a life time in the old home. Sympathy is extended to the brother and sisters and nieces and nephews who will always cherish his memory. Funeral services were held at the residence Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. with a large attendance. Rev. Herbert Worthley of the Dedham Congregational church officiating speaking in an Impressive manner expressing the feelings of all that his untimely death is greatly deplored. Clifford Burrill and Mrs. Leslie Burrill sang two selections "Sometime We'lyl Understand” and ' Beautifil Isle of Somewhere” at Mrs. Burrill's request. There was a profusion of choice floral tributes among them being a design with husband, from the wife, a basket from Ella Burrill and family a wreath from Ernest Turner, his namesake of Kalamazoo, Mich., and his sister, Mrs. Turner, a wreath from the grange, a design from the Odd Fellows, and many others from relatives and friends J. E. Haggard of Brewer had charge of arrangements. The bearers were three nephews, Harold, Leslie and Clifford Burrill and George Gray, Gerald Thompson and Elmer Gray. Interment was in the family lot on Union Cemetery. Among relatives from away were Mr. and Mrs Willis Goodwin of Whitman, Mass., Mr. and Mrs. Millard Leach of Bucksport, Mrs. Goodwin and Mrs Leach being sisters of Mrs. Burrill, Roy Maddooks of Bangor, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Ginn of North Orland.18
