     Calvin Cowing, son of Thomas Cowing and Martha Witherell, was born on 8 June 1829 at Maine.1,2

     Calvin, at age 25, son of Thomas Cowing and Martha Witherell, married Angeline C. Burrill at age 23, daughter of Daniel Stephens Burrill and Abigail L. Condon, on 17 August 1854.3,4

SHORT WILL IS FILED FOR PROBATE
One of the shortest olographic wills filed in this county was that of the late Calvin Cowling of Haywards, who died on the 9th of this month.
It is remarkable also for the fact that it is well-night indecipherable because it is written in pencil and was drawn immediately after Cowen [sic] had been stricken with paralysis. It runs as follows:
"August 12, 1901. This is to certify that I will all I die possessed of to Angeline C. Cowing." "CALVIN COWING"
The Angeline referred to is the widow of the decedent. The other heirs are Herbert G., Lillian Cowing Redman, Martha Cowing, Jennie Hansen, Chester Edward, Lillian Florence, Jessie, and William Robert McDermed, the last four are children of a deceased daughter of the decedent. The petition was filed on behalf of the widow by Attorney Neal A. McConaughey. The estate is valued at about $1,700.5
