Gertrude May Cross1,2

F, b. 8 September 1884, d. 18 March 1916
Relationships
Grandaunt of Dianne Elizabeth Smith
Grandaunt of Ellen June Smith
Gertrude M. Cross, wife of Harry L. Knowlton
Gertrude May Cross, daughter of Moses S. Cross and Mary Elizabeth Pratt, was born on 8 September 1884 at Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine.1,3

Gertrude May Cross is in this photograph with Moses and Mary and Alice Mabel Cross, which was taken circa 1895.4

Gertrude, at age 23, married Harry Leroy Knowlton at age 28, son of Henry Knowlton and Julia A. Farnham, on 16 September 1907 at Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine.5,2,6

Gertrude, being extremely ill, creating much anxiety in the Knowlton family and their many friends. She had submitted to a very serious surgical operation. It required a nurse to attend to her. A Miss Annie Crowthers of Dexter, was caring for her. This is all there was stated in the Bangor Daily News on 18 March 1916.7

Gertrude May Cross died at age 31, on 18 March 1916, at Sangerville, Piscataquis, Maine. Her cause of death was listed as Peritonitis. (Peritonitis is an inflammation (irritation) of the peritoneum, the thin tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen and covers most of the abdominal organs.)8,9,10,11

     Gertrude's obituary read as follows:
MRS. GERTRUDE CROSS KNOWLTON Many were the hearts that were bowed down with grief when it was known that Mrs. Gertrude Cross, wife of Harry L. Knowlton had stepped across into her Heavenly home at eight o'clock on the evening of March 18 after an illness of 18 days of peritonitis. All that loving hearts and hands could do was done, every suggestion tried and every wish granted, but God wanted her. Mrs. Knowlton was born in Foxcroft Sept 8, 1884, a daughter of Moses S. and Elizabeth (Pratt) Cross. Following an education in Foxcroft academy and a musical training, she took a teacher's training course at Farmington Normal school and was a most successful teacher in Foxcroft, Dover and Sangerville village. She was united in marriage Sept. 16, 1907, to Harry L. Knowlton of Sangerville and after a wedding trip they settled in East Sangerville where they had one of the prettiest homes and where for eight happy, useful years she lived, loved and respected by all the community. She was a diligent and untiring worker and her kindly disposition and the lovable qualities of her nature make the loss seem greater to all who have been associated with her. She was an honored member of the Ladies' aid of the church, having served as president an extended time, and was also a member of the East Sangerville grange, and it is in these circles that her presence and valued assistance will be missed. She was a faithful wife and mother and the tenders sympathy of all who knew her goes to the afflicted relatives. As I look on her dear face as she lay so peacefully on her snowy white couch, the busy hands folded forever, surrounded by a profusion of beautiful flowers that testified to the place she held in the hearts of her friends, all the pleasant past which leaves a fragrance in my memory which I shall ever cherish, returned to me and I recalled the many happy hours we spent together when she boarded in my home and for some years after. We walked and talked and played and sang and worked together; always so pleasant and companionable that I looked forward to the Monday mornings when Gertrude would return; and as I stood there, I wondered who could hesitate about "going home" with such friends to meet us on the other side. The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by J. H. Wilkins, who spoke very comfortingly to the bereaved ones. Besides a husband, she leaves two sons, Keith aged seven, and Carroll, aged three; also her parents and one sister, Mrs. Alice Cross Smith of Foxcroft, to mourn her loss.12

Gertrude May Cross was buried at Knowlton Mills Cemetery, Sangerville, Piscataquis, Maine.13

  8. [S38] Burnham Cemetery, online ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/me/penobscot/garland/cemetery/burnham.txt, This Cemetery is located in a very rural setting on a dirt road in in the town of Sangerville in Piscataquis County, Maine. The area in which the cemetery is located was chiefly a farming area with some lumbering in the 1800's there are no houses in the immediate vicinity of the cemetery today. It is not known how the town calculated the lot numbers in the cemetery or if some lots were consolidated into another leaving a gap in the numbers or if some lots were purchased and never used but I have copied them as they are recorded. Most of the older stones are still in tack and readable a few are broken off and laying on the ground but the cemetery is mowed on a regular basis. From Sangerville take the Back Dover Road for about 3 miles and Knowlton Mills Road will be on your right hand side. Go right on to Knowlton Mills you will cross a very small cement bridge and the cemetery will be on your left about 100 yards after that bridge. The earliest grave in the cemetery is dated 1819 on the headstone of Martha Carsley. In 2002 the cemetery is active with some lots still available. The following inscriptions were done in the summer of 2000 by a local area Girl Scout Troop and given to the Sangerville Public Library. The librarian was kind enough to give me copies of the transcript so that I could do this project. I have been to the cemetery to check the data. The lot numbers run from left to right as you stand on the road facing the cemetery with Row 1 at roadside. There is a stream that boarder’s the cemetery and across from the cemetery there is a gravel pit, which is still in use.
