Delmont H. Engstrom

LOWELL - Delmont H. Engstrom, 93, passed away peacefully Aug. 7, 2011, surrounded by his family at a Bangor health care facility. He was born Oct. 5, 1917, in East Lowell, the son of Oscar and Stella (Curtis) Engstrom. Delmont worked most of his life in Passadumkeag, Greenbush and Lee as a lumber contractor for International Paper Co., having started out as a 'cookee.' In Lee there is a road where he cut wood that is now named Engstrom Road. He and his first wife, Olive, also owned and ran Lincoln House Motel for many years. He was semi-retired in the 1960s and lived the winter months in Zephyrhills, Fla., where he built and restored many homes and has a street named after him and his friend, Norman Loefell, called Nordell Lane. He was a member of Horeb Lodge AF & AM No. 93 and a founding member of Stewart M. Lord Historical Society, Burlington. Del was well known for his charitable work around the community, working to help restore The Tavern and raise money to keep the historical society strong. Del has always been a faithful Red Sox fan and in later years an avid golfer. He was a member of Maineiac Scramblers of Zephyrhills, Fla. He loved to reminisce about his earlier years to his family's delight. He will always be remembered by friends and family as a well-respected, hard-working and honest man. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Becky; children, grandchildren, family and friends. He will now be with his first love and wife, Olive; and his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Delmont is survived by his wife, Rebecca (Bowers) Engstrom of Lowell and Zephyrhills, Fla; one son, Leroy Engstrom and his wife, Betty, of Hermon; two daughters, Muriel and her husband, Lyle Shelley, of Hermon and Dorothy and her husband, Kenneth Maley, of Arrowsic; three stepdaughters, Margaret Gibs of Hebron, Conn., Brenda and her husband, Jim Sutherland, of Lincoln and Alfreda and her husband, David Jenkins, of Hills, N.H; special son-in-law, Reggie Currie of Howland; 12 grandchildren, Terry and husband, Greg Clukey, Paul Bernard, Bobbie-Jo and husband, Mike Stiggle, Mike and wife, Leslie Currie, Lynne Currie, Aaron Currie, Chad and wife, Melony Engstrom, Shane Engstrom, Heidi and husband, Mark Gifford, Brian and Colleen Maley, Sean and Julia Maley, and Deborah and Bill Williams; and 19 great-grandchildren, Corey and wife, Abby Clukey, Nicole Clukey, Chelsea Stiggle, Gretchen and Hannah Currie, Reid Durost, Kyle and wife, Erica Engstrom, Ashley and Levi Engstrom, Kelsey, Kaleb and Gabriel Gifford, Luke, Tess, Collin and Kevin Maley, Aiden Maley, Kendra and Alan Williams. He was blessed with two great-great-granddaughters, Maddison Clukey and Izzabelle Engstrom. He also has many stepgrandchildren, great-stepgrandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife of 52 years, Olive (Bowers) Engstrom; his mother, Stella and stepfather, Earl Jordan; his father, Oscar and stepmother, Doris; a daughter, Nancy Currie; a son, Delmont Engstrom Jr; three brothers, Theron, Averill and Shirley; and two sisters, Virginia and Rose. At Delmont's request, there will be no calling services or funeral. Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at Lowell Cemetery with the Rev. Garnett Chute and Keith Shorey officiating. A celebration of his life will be held after the service. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to Stewart M. Lord Historical Society, P.O.
