Mary Elizabeth Leathers, wife of Philip A. Danforth
     Mary Elizabeth Leathers, daughter of Moses Leathers and Sarah Adeline Horn, was born on 17 October 1845 at Maine.1,2,3

     Mary, at age 16, daughter of Moses Leathers and Sarah Adeline Horn, married Philip Augustus Danforth at age 23, son of Philip Danforth Jr and Rhoda Smith, on 22 October 1861 at Bradford, Penobscot, Maine, by C. L. Cary.4

     Mary Elizabeth Leathers and Philip Augustus Danforth purchased for fifty dollars 10 acres from the Southwest corner of lot numbered one hundred and ninty-seven survey to commence at the Southwest corner of said Lot 197, and run East forty rods on the South line of said Lot 197. Thense forty rods Northerly parallel with the West lineof said Lot 197. Thence, Westerly forty rods so as to intersect the West line of said Lot 197. forty rods from the first mentioned bound thense forty rods Southerly on the West line of said Lot No. 197 to the first mentioned bounds containing ten acres and the same this day to said Danforth. Registry of Deeds, Bangor, Penobscot, Maine on 3 October 1868, at Bradford, Penobscot, Maine.5

     On 23 November 1879 Mary sent a letter to Philip . He tells Lizzie how good it is to hear from her. Philip also provides Lizzie some guidance, even though he is far away.6

     Mary Elizabeth Leathers purchased for one hundred dollars, a certain lot or parcel of land situated in Bradford aforesaid and described as follows, to wit. the Easterly twenty-five acres of lot numbered one hundred and eighty-five (185) as laid down on a plan of said town of Bradford made by Andrew Strongs survey dated August 28th 1822. Bangor, Penobscot, Maine on 22 June 1897 at Bradford, Penobscot, Maine.7

     Mary Elizabeth Leathers died on 20 September 1916 at Bradford, Penobscot, Maine, at age 70. Mary died from 'acute nephrites' (Acute nephritis is an inflammation of the glomeruli (the main functioning units of the kidney which comprise of tissues and blood vessels)8,9,10 and was buried at Williams Cemetery, Bradford, Penobscot, Maine.11,12

     Mary left a Will on 8 November 1916 at Bradford, Penobscot, Maine, Unknown GEDCOM info: 08 NOV 1916.13

Obituary

'Mrs. Elizabeth Leathers Danforth, widow of the late Augustus Danforth died at her home in Bradford Wednesday from an attack of accute indigestion. Mrs Danforth was born in Bradford 70 years ago, and lived there all her life. Mr. Danforth's death occured a year ago. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs, S. H. Smith of Charleston, Mrs. D. A. Tewksbury of Bradford, Mrs. James Mulvaney, Mrs. Anne Withee of Bangor; two sons Philip L. Danforth and Charles W. Danforth of Bradford. A woman of fine personality, gentle, willing and gracious, hers is a loss which will be keenly felt by all who knew her. A devoted wife and tender mother, a loyal friend and kindly neighbor hers was a life so lived as to endear her to all, and leaves vacant in home, in church and social life a place not to be filled. The funeral services will take place Friday afternoon at the late residence in Bradford.11,20'

Moses Leathers, husband of Sarah A. Horn
     Moses Leathers, son of Philip Bartlett Leathers, was born circa 14 July 1821 at Maine.3,2

     Moses, son of Philip Bartlett Leathers, married Sarah Adeline Horn at age 15, daughter of Spencer H. Horn and Sally (Sarah) Canney, on 8 November 1844 at Stetson, Penobscot, Maine.4,5

     Moses Leathers Moses had a need for $14.00 dollars. A promissory note was created with one three year old heifer belonging to Moses was put up as security. He (Moses) agreed to keep the heifer in good health. It is signed by T C Tasker, Moses Leathers and Attested Lewis B. Randall (Town Clerk of Bradford) on 3 January 1860.6

     There were four civil war drafts that included 776,000 individuals in that time. The records contain class, congressional district, county, state, residence, name, age on July 1, 1863, race, profession, married status, birthplace, former military service, and remarks. Moses was listed on the Draft Log. At the time he was living at Bradford, Penobscot, Maine. The month of registration was in June 1863. He was listed as a farmer.7

     Moses and Sarah purchased land for One Hundred dollars in the northerly fifty-six acres of Lot numbered two hundred & nine (209) in said town of Bradford as laid down on a plan of said town made by Andrew Strong, Surveyor, dated August 28, 1822, and the same this day conveyed to said Sarah A. Leathers, by said Fuller and others. Provided nevertheless, that if the said Moses A. Leathers & Sarah A. Leathers, shall well and truly pay to the said Fuller, his heirs, exectors, administrators or assigns the sum of One Hundred dollars and interest annually from date as follows: one note of this date for fifty dollars with interest annually to be paid in one year and one other note of this date for fifty dollars to be paid in two years with interest annually, as per note of this date then this deed and said note to be null and void, otherwise to remain in full force and effect. Bangor, Penobscot, Maine, October 17, 1864. on 3 September 1864 at Bradford, Penobscot, Maine.8

     Moses and Sarah purchased land for Two Hundred dollars parcel of real estate situated in the town of Bradford. Being the Northerly fifty six acres of Lot numbered two hundred and nine (209) as laid down on a plan of said town made by Andrew Strong, surveyor, dated August 28, 1822 subject to any roads or highways on the same. Meaning the home farm and buildings where the parties to this transaction now live is deeded to Sarah A. Leathers by B. A. G. Fuller and others Sept 3rd 1864. Bangor, Penobscot, Maine, 28th day of October 1874 on 28 October 1874 at Bradford, Penobscot, Maine.9

     Moses and Sarah purchased land for Three Hundred and Twenty-Five dollars a certain parcel of land situated in said Bradford and bounded as follows: on the West by the west branch of Dead Stream. On the North by the Cloutrman Lot so-called. On the East by land occupied by the town of Bradford as a Loom Farm on the South by the County Road leading from North Bradford to LaGrange Corner containing sixty five acres more or less. The same being the east part of Lot No. 71 in said Bradford. The intention being to quit-claim the half of said real estate. Bangor, Penobscot, Maine March 16, 1875. on 3 December 1874 at Bradford, Penobscot, Maine.10

     Moses was assessed 1883 farm taxes as follows: owning 60 acres, real estate valued at $200.00, he had two oxen value $55.00; two 2 year old cows valued at $12.00 each; three yearlings at $13.00; thirteen sheep valued at $25.00. His total value of personal real estate was $105.00. The total of both was $305.00 and the sum of his tax was $7.68 in 1883.11

     Moses was highlighted during the Bradford Cattle Show and Fair. It appears, was a proud farmer. He had 'Best Pair' working oxen, 'Best Pair Matching Oxen', 'Best Pair Fat Oxen' and 'Best Fat Cow' on 1 October 1886 at Bradford, Penobscot, Maine.12 He and Sarah Adeline Horn were New Tag Two Hundred Ten dollars a certain parcel of land situated in Bradford aforesaid being the Easterly part of the North half of Lot 209, according to Strong's plan and survey of said Bradford and bounded as follows, wit: Beginning at he corner of the roads near the school house in District No. 14. Thence Westerly on the town road thirty one and one half rods then North 18 1/2, East thirty three and one half rods to the South end of a stone wall. Thence on said wall fifty six and one half rods to the North line of said lot. Thence Easterly on said North line 28 rods to the county road, thence Southerly of said county road 19 3/4 rods to place of beginning, containing seventeen acres more or less. Bangor, Penobscot, Maine November 17, 1888 on 15 October 1888 at Bradford, Penobscot, Maine.13

     Moses left a Will on 2 June 1902 at Bradford, Penobscot, Maine. His Will read as follows:
Be it remembered that I, Moses Leathers of Bradford in the County of Penobscot and State of Maine being of sound and disposing mind and memory do make publish and declare this my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all former Wills by me made.
After the payment of my just debts, funeral charges and expenses of administration I dispose of my estate as follows: FIRST: I give and devise to my beloved wife Sarah A. Leathers, all of my real estate, wherever found.
SECOND: I give and bequeath to my children Lizzie M. Danforth, Jennie O. Woodward, Frank C. Leathers, Geo. M. Leathers, Henry P. Leathers, Carrie A. Welch and Flora E. Maxfield, the sum of one dollar each.
THIRD: I give and bequeath to my granddaughter, Ida E. Leathers the sum of one dollar.
FOURTH: I giv and bequeath to my wife Sarah A. Leathers, the remainder of his estate.
In testamony whereof thereunto set my hand and seal and declare this to be my last Will and Testament this Second day of June A. D. 1902 SIGNED Moses Leathers.14


     Moses died on 1 July 1902, at Bradford, Penobscot, Maine, His cause of death was listed as valvular disease.15 He was buried at Williams Cemetery, Bradford, Penobscot, Maine.16

His real estate was valued at $400.00 and personal property at $200.00.
