The marriage of Miss Maude Marsh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J W. Marsh, of Foxcroft and Charles Stanhope, son of Dr. and Mrs. A. H. Stanhope, of Dover took place Sept. 12, at the homo of the bride. The ceremony was performed by Rev. J. H. Wilkins. In October they will go to Portland to reside.1,6


     Maude was Dateline Dover Foxcroft - Miss Ida M. Folsom was hostess at a brunch party recently, at her Winter Street home, in honor of Mrs. Charles W (N) Stanhope who recently returned from a trip to Hollywood. Mrs. Stanhope spoke of her plane trip to Hollywood, of some of the film stars whom she met, and of her visit with her sister Mrs. John Van Pelt, known on screen and radio as Myra Marsh circa 31 December 1946.7

     Maude was Maine Forests, Fields and Streams was the subject of a paper prepared by Mrs. Mary Halselton Noyes at a meeting on Jan 30 (1948) with Mrs. Hortense Bigelow, hostess. The refreshment committee will include Mrs. Maude Stanhope, Miss Bertha Tardy and Mrs. Hilda Robbins on 30 January 1948.8

     Maude died on 6 February 1980, at Dover Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine, at age 87,9 and was buried at Dover Cemetery, Dover Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine.10

     Maude and Charles appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Dover, Piscataquis, Maine, enumerated 10 January 1920. Unknown GEDCOM info: 10 JAN 1920 Charles was a practicing physican. He and the family were renting a home..13

     Maude and Charles appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Dover Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine, enumerated 14 April 1930. The census showed Charles owned his home, valued at $8000.00. In addition, they had a radio in the home. He was working as a physician Their children, Murray Marsh and Barbara M. were listed as living with them.14

     Maude and Charles appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Dover Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine, at 115 Dexter Road, enumerated 11 April 1940. Charles owned his home, valued at $2000.00. He completed five years college and Maude completed one year college.. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $16.26 in the year 2012. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2012 would have cost $.21 cents in 1940.15

MAUDE M STANHOPE

DOVER-FOXCROFT — Maude M. Stanhope, 87, died Feb. 6, 1980, at a local nursing home after an illness of several weeks. She was the widow of Dr. Charles N. Stanhope. She was born in LaGrange, June 15, 1892, the daughter of John W. and Esther (Adams) Marsh. She was a graduate of Foxcroft Academy, class of 1912 and she taught for two years at the Gilman School in Dover-Foxcroft before attending Gorham Normal School. In 1916, she married Charles N. Stanhope and went with him to Portland where he earned his MD from Bowdoin College. She was a member of the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church and belonged to the Women's Fewllowship and the Supper Club of the church. She was a member of the Teachers Club, past president of the Antique Research Club and a member of the Cosmopolitan Club, which she joined in 1922, and over the years held several offices. For over 50 years she did not miss a meeting. For 40 years she was treasurer of the Foxcroft Academy Scholarship Association, and enjoyed helping students receive o higher education. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Piscataquis Medical Association, and served the assocuation as president and secretary. She was the "bride" at the official ceremonies joining the towns of Dover and Foxcroft in 1922. She was an ardent bridge player. She is survived by one son, Murray M. Stanhope of Dover-Foxcroft, one daughter, Miss Barbara M. Stanhope of Providence, R.I; two grandsons two granddaughters; three great-grandsons, one great-granddaughter several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at the Lary Funeral Home, Saturday at 2 pm with the Rev. Donald F. Davenport, of the Congregational Church officiating. Spring burial will be in the family lot in Dover Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm.16
