Madeline Beattie 1921 - 2009

NORTH ADAMS Madeline E. Beattie, 87, of Ashland Street, a former longtime resident of Catherine Street, died Sunday evening, Feb. 1, 2009, at Albany Medical Center Hospital (N.Y.), following a brief illness. Born on Nov. 3, 1921, in Calais, Maine, daughter of Eben M. and Cora E. Glidden Smith, Madeline was a 1939 graduate of Calais Memorial High School, where she was a two-sport star athlete, playing basketball and softball and was captain of both teams. After high school, she enrolled in the Nursing Program at Lawrence General Hospital in Lawrence. Upon graduating from Nursing School in 1942, she enlisted in World War II with the Army Nurse Corps, receiving the commission of second lieutenant, serving overseas in Manila, Philippines, as a charge nurse for a psychiatric ward. She was honorably discharged in 1945. Returning from World War II, she met her future spouse, William F. Beattie of North Adams. They were wed Sept 23, 1947, enjoying 49 years of marriage until his passing in 1996. Madeline was employed as a registered nurse for many years, retiring from Sweet Brook Nursing Home. She also provided private duty nursing care. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of North Adams, the Registered Nurse's Association, and the Sweet Adelines Chorus. Her interest included caring for her grandchildren, floral gardening, baking, watching the back yard birds, and being an avid Red Sox Fan. She leaves her son, William T. Beattie and his wife, Martha, of Clarksburg; a daughter, Rosealice Beattie of North Adams; grandchildren, Aaron, Stefan, Bret, and Jordan Beattie all of Sandy, Utah, Mary-Ellen Beattie, attending Dickinson College, Pa., Tami Hillman and her companion, Jack Hicks of Lyman, Maine, Carrie Brassard and her husband, Michael, and Amy Carddi and her husband, Nathan all of North Adams; great-grandchildren, Shelby and Wyatt Hillman, Allison and Michael, (Jr.) Brassard, and Ava Rose Carddi, and a sister, Doris Christie of Auburn, Maine. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services will be Thursday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. at AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 46 North Church St., North Adams. The Rev Kim E. Kie, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of North Adams, will officiate. Burial will be at Maple Street Cemetery, Adams.
