The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Just about a year before that, in October 1940, President Roosevelt had signed into law the first peacetime selective service draft in U.S. history, due to rising world conflicts. After the U.S. entered WWII a new selective service act required that all men between ages 18 and 65 register for the draft. Between November 1940 and October 1946, over 10 million American men were registered. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the "old man's registration", was conducted on 27 April 1942 and registered men who born on or between 28 April 1877 and 16 February 1897 - men who were between 45 and 64 years old - and who were not already in the military. Walter filled out a draft card for World War II circa 1940, while living at Oak Place, Bayville, Nassau, New York. Walter, a widower with two small children, listed his deceased wife's sister as contact person.11

Walter was a very good automotive mechanic. His work was very highly praised. People from all over wanted him to do the work on their car. It was at this time a garage owner named George Peterson, turned over the mechanical side of his garage to him. on 6 February 1947.15

Walter was starting the process to build his own Service Station. The Oyster Bay 'Zoning Board of Appeals' started the review. On 12 August 1948, the Board granted the variance for the garage. On October 7 1948, ground was broken to start building the garage. Unfortunately, shortly after getting the walls started, a storm passed through and brought the walls down. All efforts to continue stopped. on 5 August 1948.16

Walter was placed a newspaper announcement, announcing the marriage of his daughter Evelyn to Michael J. Collins. Michael is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Collins of Cove Road, Oyster Bay, New York. Evelyn's attendant was Miss Pearl Kurowski and Michael's brother Patrick was the best man on 23 August 1951.17
