James Ward Van Dyke, husband of Jennette Peters
     James Ward Van Dyke, son of John Van Dyke and Margaret Hazelwood, was born on 13 May 1853 at Cumberland, Illinois.1

     James married Jennette Peters, daughter of Charles H. Peters and Margaret Stonebarger, on 9 May 1880, at Cumberland, Illinois.1

     James and Jennette were in this photograph which was taken circa May 1898 at Illinois.2

     James died on 8 July 1933, at Greenup, Cumberland, Illinois, at age 80,3,4 and was buried at Greenup Cemetery, Greenup, Cumberland, Illinois.3
     Jennette was in this photograph, with George Dewey Van Dyke, Walter Scott Van Dyke and Golda Van Dyke.5

     James and Jennette appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Greenup, Cumberland, Illinois, enumerated 9 January 1920. James was a dairy and grain farmer. Their children, Isaac B., James Clinton and Walter Scott were listed as living with them.11

     James and Jennette appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Greenup, Cumberland, Illinois, enumerated 15 April 1930. James was working as a farmer. He owned his farm valued at $6500.00 Their children, Isaac B. were listed as living with them.12

Jan Van Dyke, husband of Anna Verkerk
     Jan Van Dyke, son of Captain Jan Janse Van Dyke and Teuntje Thyssen Lanen Van Pelt, was born in 1682.1,2,3

     Jan Van Dyke and Anna (Annetje) Verkerk lived circa 1706. About three miles from Spotswood, Middlesex County, New Jersey, where he owned 2135 acres of land. This was reflected in his Will which was recorded in the office of the Secretary of State at Trenton, New Jersey, on June 28 1765. In a 'List of the militia under the command of Col. Thos: Harmar in the year 1715 New Jersey,' recorded in Colonial Records, vol. lx, page 72, in Sixth Company, Peter Demont, Captian, are found the names of privates Abra. Van Veghte and Derick Van Veghte, and in the Fifth Company of same regiment is found the name of our ancestor 'private Jno. Vandike' When in New Brunswick, New Jersey was first settled in 1681, it was called 'Prigmores Swamp.' It increased in size and importance and was incorporated as a city on December 30, 1730, by charter of King George II. It's first Mayor was Thomas Farmer and John Van Dyke was one of the first Aldermen.4,5

     Jan married Anna (Annetje) Verkerk, daughter of Roelof Jansen Verkerk and Catharine Simons, on 6 June 1706.6,7

     Jan died on 8 December 1764, A quote fron the book, 'The Raritan'
Their graves are still intact in the Ten Mile Run Cemetery—a burying ground originally belonging in Jan's tract and given by him in his will to his son Jacob. The propensity of the time to drop the Dutch and go on with the English was, perhaps thoughtlessly, shown on the gravestones of the pair where Jan appears translated as 'Jno. Senr.,' and Annetje as 'Ann.' On both stones in English one reads, 'Upwards of 80 years.' It is something of a pity that those who had been Dutch all their lives could not have been allowed to remain Dutch in their graves.
