A quasi biography/obituary of Stephen Douglas Van Dyke was posted on Find A Grave as follows:
Son of John and Margaret (Hazelwood) Vandyke. Few persons knew the Dough Van Dyke was ailing when the sad news was announced on the street Friday evening that he was dead . Only a few days before he was seen on the street in as apparently good health as ever... Death is no respecter of persons. When once in its awful grasp the strong and the weak are alike. In this instance it chose as its victim one of strong build and robust constitution; one who was ambitious and energetic and was just entering upon a life of usefulness, the foundation for which had ben laid and well planned.

Stephen D. Van Dyke was born on the old homestead, a short distance north of town on May 20, 1860 and died June 24, 1892 at 5 o'clock in the evening, his age being 32 years 28 days. He leaves aged parents , nine sisters and two brothers. The funeral service was held at 3:30 Saturday afternoon and was conducted by Rev. D.D. Judson, who read a portions of the 11th Chapter 11th John and took as a text for the appropriate of the text: "If a man dies shall he live again?"

Stephen R. Van Dyke, husband of Selina Seaman
Stephen R. Van Dyke, son of Albert P. Van Dyke and Charity Denice, was born on 4 March 1870 at Flatlands, Kings, New York.2,3

Stephen married Selina Seaman, daughter of Stephen Eldert Seaman and Cornelia Ann Denton, on 4 March 1896, at Canarsie, Kings, New York.4,5,6

Stephen R. Van Dyke had a method for improper behavior. Stephen's "...method of disipline seems severe today. His son told of him hanging the boys by their thumbs in a barn. His oldest son at age 16 was doing some work with a team of horses. Evidently, he wasn't doing it to suit his father. Steven ran and got a bullwhip. As he started to use it on son, Lester, standing 6 foot and 3 inches, grabbed the bullwhip and left home. But his son loved his father. One time when drunk, his brother-in-law was beating up on him (Stephen) as Stephen was not a large man, young Lester jumped off the wagon and knocked Charley flat. Uncle never bothered Stephen after that. As he grew older, I remember him as a little old fellow that was dependent on his wife. Steven was a farmer, a gravedigger and a clam digger. He lived to age 84."7

As part of a list of heirs and next of kin, Stephen R. Van Dyke, residing at Canarsie, Brooklyn, New York, was listed as part of the "Notice of Petition for Letters of Administration", probate of the estate of John R. Denice after 27 January 1908
