Betty Jo (Berney), wife of Lester C. Van Dyke
     Betty Jo Berney, daughter of Arthur George Berney and Josephine Aveline Noland, was born on 23 January 1925 at Idaho.1,2

     Betty married Lester Clinton Van Dyke, son of Lester Rushmore Van Dyke and Gertrude Catherine Walling, on 10 June 1944,

VAN DYKE-BERNEY

Miss Betty Jo Berney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Berney of Grandview became the bride of Cadet Lester Van Dyke of Long Island, N. Y., Saturday June 10 in the Knight Congregational church in Grandview. The Rev. L. G. Knight of Nampa read the wedding vow's in the presence of 50 invited guests and relatives. The bride wore an afternoon dress of white crepe with white accessories and she carried a bouquet of white carnations and sweetheart roses with white satin streamers. Miss Julia Eastman of Adrian, Ore., was maid of honor and wore a yellow crepe afternoon dress with white accessories and a white carnation and rosebud corsage. Cadet Harold J Smith of Staten Island N Y was best man. Preceedlng the ceremony, Mrs. Elmer Spang sang "I Love You Truly” accompanied by Mrs. Morgan Shaw who played the wedding marches. Mrs. Van Dyke is a graduate of Grandview high school and has attended the College of Idaho in Caldwell the last two years. She is to teach the 1944-45 school year at Emmett. The bridegroom attended schools in New York and at present is an air cadet at the College of Idaho. A reception was held at the church after the wedding. Mrs. Pauline Stolley, Miss Beth Palmer, Mrs David Basey, Mrs. Robert Duncan, Mrs. George Rocks, Mrs. Ross Osborn and Mrs. Harold Bailey assisted the hostess. The couple will make their home in Caldwell while Cadet Van Dyke is stationed there.3,4


     Betty died on 28 October 2002, at age 77,5 and was buried at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, Riverside, California.6

     Betty appeared on the 1930 Federal Census, enumerated 14 April 1930, of Garbutt Wash, Owyhee, Idaho in the household of her parents, Arthur and Josephine.7

     Betty appeared on the 1940 Federal Census, enumerated 23 April 1940, of Garbuut, Owyhee, Idaho in the household of her parents, Arthur and Josephine.8

     Betty, and her two children appeared on the 1950 Federal Census, enumerated 19 April 1950, of Garbuut, Owyhee, Idaho in the household of her parents, Arthur and Josephine. She was a 5th and 6th grade teacher.9

Van Dyke, Betty, 77, passed away October 28, 2002, of Pleasant Hill. Teacher. She is survived by her husband, Lester Van Dyke. Graveside Service will be held Mon., Nov. 18th at 1:15 PM at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, CA. Arrangements by TraditionCare Funeral Services of Pleasant Hill, 925-827-2911. Published in the Contra Costa Times on 11/7/2002. Betty Jo Van Dyke Betty Jo Van Dyke, 77, Martinez resident of 37 years, passed away on October 28, 2002 at Kaiser Walnut Creek. She was a teacher at the Martinez School District for 25 years. She is survived by her loving husband, Lester Van Dyke, and five children: Diana, David, Jeff, Carol, and Beverly, and ten grandchildren: Leslie, Gordon, Bobby, Samuel, Micah, Joel, Kylie, Azar, Marie and Ruthanne. Memorial services will be held this Saturday, 2 p.m., November 2, 2002, at the Morello Hills Christian Church, 1000 Morello Hills Drive, Martinez. Memorial gifts may be given to Morello Hills Christian Church. Arrangements under the care of TraditionCare Funeral Services of Pleasant Hill, (925) 827-2911.10
