Astrid E. Backlund, 2nd wife of Walter C. Van Dyke
     Astrid Elizabeth Bäcklund, daughter of Oskar Julius Bäcklund and Lisa Åberg, was born on 7 October 1915, at 25 Alexander Ave, North Montclair, Essex, New Jersey.1

     Astrid Elizabeth Bäcklund was baptized on 7 May 1916, at First Lutheran Church, Montclair, Essex, New Jersey. Her parents, Oskar, Lisa and her uncle and aunt, Nils Ludwig Bäcklund and Anna Maria Johnson were present.3

     After 9 October 1918, Astrid was living with her uncle, Nils Ludwig and his wife, Anna Maria.
An extract from Ruth Rawstrom's diary states:
January 07, 1921 - Yes, I went to Moie's Thursday night and stayed over night. Nothing exciting happened. We just had a pleasant evening chat and went to bed about 10:45. Uncle Oscar and Aunt Lisa's (who are both dead) girl Astrid has been living with Moie since September. She used to live with Lud and Moster but now I think Moie and Gotfrid expect to legally adopt her soon.
(According to documents viewed during the probate of Carl Seadale, the adoption never took place.)4 She was living here during this time circa 1925 at 25 Ostego Road, Verona, New Jersey.5

     Astrid applied for a social security card, 20 October 1938, while at 15 Rose Avenue, Glen Cove, Nassau, New York. Looking at a copy of the Form SS-5, Astrid reflected her father as Carl William Seadale and mother as Anna B (Becklund) Seadale. This later was in error with the probate of Carl Seadale uncovered her actual parents.6

     Astrid married Walter Carman Van Dyke, son of Stephen R. Van Dyke and Selina Seaman, circa December 1941.7,8

     Astrid, Walter, and son, John lived between 1943 and 1951 first, North Street, then 244 Forest Avenue, Locust Valley, N.Y. The family then moved to 1 Pine Place; then, after their new house was completed, they moved to 32 Preswick Terrace, both in Glen Cove.9

     Astrid, and her two children, John and Walter lived after July 1957 at 85 Beach Road, Massapequa, New York. We lived at this address for almost one year.9

     Astrid, and her two children, John and Walter lived after circa 1959 at 10 Deland Street, East Northport, Suffolk, New York.9

     Astrid died on 4 July 1990 at Brookhaven Hospital, Brookhaven, Suffolk, New York, at age 74. Astrid died from cardiac arrhythmia with congestive heart failure.10

     Astrid Elizabeth Bäcklund was cremated, on 7 July 1990. Her remains were returned to the sea. Betty always loved fish and fishing, so she felt fitting to give back to the sea. We traveled on a 'fishing rig' out of Freeport, Long Island, New York and her ashes were set free in the East Bay.11

Census

     Astrid Elizabeth Bäcklund appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Montclair, Essex, New Jersey in the household of her uncle, Nils Ludwig Bäcklund, and his wife, Anna. She was left without out parents due to the Spanish Influenza.12

     Although listed as a daughter,Astrid Elizabeth Bäcklund appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Verona, Essex, New Jersey, in the household of her uncle, Carl Wilhelm Gottfrid Seadale and aunt, Anna.13

     Astrid Elizabeth Bäcklund appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Glen Cove, Nassau, New York in the household of her uncle, Carl. She was listed as nursing, at a private home.14

     Astrid and Walter appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Locust Valley, Nassau, New York, at 244 Forest Avenue, enumerated 7 April 1950. Walter was working at an aircraft factory doing piece work and Astrid working at a drug factory. Their son, John William and Astrid's children, Evelyn and Robert were listed as living with them.15
