Joan Moberg Falls - Joan Moberg Falls, 81, of Etlan, passed away on Friday, February 14, 2014, in Stanardsville, Virginia. Born on September 19, 1932, in Montclair, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Sigurd Manfred Moberg and Beda Rawstrom Moberg. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Roger Manfred Moberg of Etlan. She is survived by her husband, Robert Andrew Falls of Etlan; one daughter, Kathleen Falls Hinkofer and husband, Jon, of Woodbridge; two sons, Kevin Andrew Falls of Lorton, and Erik Clyde Falls and wife, Darby, of Bristow; four grandchildren, Katarina Hinkofer and Allyson Hinkofer of Woodbridge, Christopher Falls and Delaney Falls of Bristow. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, February 20, 2014, at Etlan Cemetery conducted by the Reverend Dan Yowell. The family received friends Wednesday evening, February 19, 2014, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Preddy Funeral Home in Madison.4

Roger Manfred Moberg Sr.

Roger Manfred Moberg Sr. 74, of Etlan, died Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at his residence. He was born January 22, 1935, in East Orange, New Jersey, the son of the late Sigurd Manfred Moberg and Beda Rawstrom Moberg. Mr. Moberg was a retired bridge inspector for the Virginia Department of Transportation in Fairfax for many years. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Merelyn D. Moberg of Etlan; his children, Connie M. Aylor and her husband, E.J., of Etlan, Kelly A. Moberg of Berryville, Roger M. Moberg Jr. and his wife, Meg, of Ashland, Michael E. Moberg of Etlan; a sister, Joan M. Falls and her husband, Bob, of Etlan; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, November 5, 2009, at Etlan Cemetery conducted by the Reverend Dan Yowell. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 4, 2009, at the Preddy Funeral Home in Madison. Memorial contributions may be made to F.T. Baptist Church, P.O. Sigurd Manfred Moberg, husband of Beda K. Rawstrom
     Sigurd Manfred Moberg, son of Axel Manfred Moberg and Maria Elisabeth Granath, was born on 9 December 1904 at Skaraborg, Skara stadsförsamling, Sverige.3

     Sigurd married Beda Karolina Rawstrom, daughter of Karl (Charles) Arvid Konstantin Rawstrom and Hilda Kristina Bäcklund, on 6 April 1929, at Suffern, New York.1,4

     The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Just about a year before that, in October 1940, President Roosevelt had signed into law the first peacetime selective service draft in U.S. history, due to rising world conflicts. After the U.S. entered WWII a new selective service act required that all men between ages 18 and 65 register for the draft. Between November 1940 and October 1946, over 10 million American men were registered. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the "old man's registration", was conducted on 27 April 1942 and registered men who born on or between 28 April 1877 and 16 February 1897 - men who were between 45 and 64 years old - and who were not already in the military. Sigurd filled out a draft card for World War II on 16 October 1940 (at age 35), while living at Mellon Ave., East Orangs, Essex, New Jersey. He was working for the E. J. Brooks Company.5

     Sigurd cited the oath of allegiance and was naturalized on 11 January 1943, at the U. S. District Court, Newark, New Jersey.6

     Sigurd died on 10 February 1990, at Culpeper Healthcare Center, Culpeper, Culpeper, Virginia, at age 85. Sigurd's cause of death was listed as cardiac arrest.7,8 He was buried at Etlan Cemetery, Etlan, Madison, Virginia.9

Census

     Sigurd and Beda appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of West Orange, Essex, New Jersey, at 25 Mellon Ave, enumerated 25 April 1940. Sig was a fireman at an electric company. He owned a home, valued at $2500.00. Their children, Joan Carol and Roger Manfred, and Beda's sister, Doris were listed as living with them. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $16.26 in the year 2012. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2012 would have cost $.21 cents in 1940.10

     Sigurd and Beda appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of West Orange, Essex, New Jersey, enumerated 1 April 1950. He was a plant manager at a lead factory. Their children, Joan Carol and Roger Manfred were listed as living with them.11
