     Josephine Aveline Noland was born on 30 September 1900 at North Carolina.2,3

     Josephine married Arthur George Berney, son of Ulysses Henri Berney and Anna Louise Rochat, on 1 November 1920, at Walla Walla, Washington.4,5

     Josephine died on 16 October 1991, at age 91,3 and was buried at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, Riverside, California.6

Census

     Josephine and Arthur appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Garbutt Wash, Owyhee, Idaho, enumerated 14 April 1930. Arthur was working as a farm operator on a general farm. He was renting and they had a radio in the house. A boarder, William Goats, was living with the family. Their children, Elaine Violet, Betty Jo and Arthur Gordon were listed as living with them.7

     Josephine and Arthur appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Garbuut, Owyhee, Idaho, enumerated 23 April 1940. Arthur was the owner operator of his farm, valued at $10,000.00. The census indicated he completed one year of college. Josephine completed two years of college. Their children, Betty Jo and Arthur Gordon were listed as living with them. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $21.35 in the year 2022. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2022 would have cost $.17 cents in 1940.8

     Josephine and Arthur appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Garbuut, Owyhee, Idaho, enumerated 19 April 1950. Arthur was working as a farmer. Their children, Linda G. and Betty Jo were listed as living with them.9

Josephine A. Berney

A funeral service will be held this morning for two-year Martinez resident Josephine A Berney, who died October 16 at her home. A native of North Carolina she was 90 years of age. A homemaker for 60 years Mrs. Berney formerly lived for 18 years in Palm Springs and for 50 years in Grand View, Idaho. She was a member of the Palm Springs Community Church the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as an officer of the Idaho State Grange in Boise, Idaho. Mrs Berney was the wife of the late Arthur Berney who died in 1979 They had been married for 50 years She was the mother of Betty Van Dyke of Martinez, Linda Grimm of Palm Springs, and the late Elaine Berney and Gordon Berney; sister of Ray Noland of Medford, Oregon; Dr. Roy Noland of California and Violet Phinney of Green Acres, Washington. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren Today’s service will be at 11 am at Connolly and Taylor Chapel 4000 Alhambra Ave Interment private. Visitation this morning from 9 am until service time at the mortuary Contributions to Hospice of Contra Costa 140 Mayhew Way Pleasant Hill 94523 preferred10
