Alice Mabel Cross, wife of Henry Bean Smith
     Alice Mabel Cross, daughter of Moses S. Cross and Mary Elizabeth Pratt, was born on 7 September 1891 at Sebec, Piscataquis, Maine.1,3

     Alice, at age 24, daughter of Moses S. Cross and Mary Elizabeth Pratt, married Henry Bean Smith at age 28, son of Henry Sherman Smith and Nellie Jane Danforth, on 1 January 1916 at Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine,

Henry and Alice Marriage

- The marriage of Henry B. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Smith of Charleston, and Miss Alice Mabel Cross, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Moses S. Cross of Foxcroft, took place at noon on New Years day at the home of the officiating clergyman, Rev. J. H. Wilkin, pastor of the Congregational church of these towns. The single ring service was used. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are popular young people of the twin towns and have the best wishes of their many friends. They will reside in apartments in Walter D. Oakes house in Summer street.4,5,6,7,8


     Alice was petitioned by the probate court to be appointed 'Guardian' for Carroll Knowlton, 19 years old, child of Gertrude and Harry L. Knowlton. The earlier passing of Gertrude, (in 1916), leaving Harry, then his passing in May 1919, along with the passing of Moses left him parentless on 12 May 1931.9

     Alice and Henry were included in the book, 'Dover Foxcroft Biographies'. Henry was listed as a farmer and cattle dealer. Henry was a member of the Central Grange. circa 1948.10

     On 11 December 1959 Ethel sent a letter to Alice . Ethel says she will be going to and "Old Age" home. Also, the different events done there on a daily basis. She speaks of Frank Burgess' death and Annie Kenny's death.11

     In this photograph Alice and Henry were at Dover Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine.12

     On 3 August 1960 Ethel sent a letter to Alice . At Rockland, Knox, Maine.11

     Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. Smith have sold their homestead, land, and buildings on the Milo road to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth W. Perkins. The place was formerly known as the Moses Cross farm, on 13 March 1962.13

     Alice died on 15 January 1964 at Dover Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine, at age 72.14 and was buried at Lee Cemetery, Dover Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine.15

     Alice appeared on the 1910 Federal Census in Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine in the household of her parents, Moses and Mary.17

     Alice and Henry appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine, enumerated 15 January 1920. He listed his work as salesman in retail groceries. They lived (were renting) on Summer Street. Their children, Elizabeth Gertrude and Cleon Moses, and a 1st cousin, with his wife, Harry A. and Hazel Hattie were listed as living with them.18

     Alice and Henry appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Dover Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine, enumerated 18 April 1930. He worked as a farmer and owned their home valued at $2500.00. Their children, Elizabeth Gertrude and Cleon Moses were listed as living with them.19

     Alice and Henry appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Dover Foxcroft, Piscataquis, Maine, enumerated 26 April 1940. Henry owned his farm, valued at $3500.00. The census indicated Henry completed the eighth grade and Alice two years of high school. Their children, Cleon Moses and Elizabeth Gertrude were listed as living with them. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $18.90 in the year 2019. A $1.87 half gallon of milk in 2019 would have cost $.11 cents in 1940.20

ALICE C SMITH

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Mrs. Alice C. Smith, 72, died Wednesday night at her home on East Main Street after several months illness. She was born here September 7, 1891, daughter of Moses and Lizzie (Pratt) Cross. She is survived by her husband, Henry B; a son, Cleon M; a daughter Mrs. Murray M. Stanhope all of Dover-Foxcroft; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; two nephews. She attended Foxcroft Academy and was a former member of Central Grange. Funeral services will be at 2 p. m., Saturday, at Lary Funeral Home, the Rev. John W. Melsner officiating. Spring burial will be in the Lee Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p m.21
