Steven Coerte Van Voorhees1

M, d. after 1702
     Steven Coerte Van Voorhees
name appears on the assessment rolls of Flatlands of 1675 and 1683, a member of the Dutch Church of Flatlands and Deacon in 1677, a Magistrate in 1664 and 1673, and Captain of Militia in 1689. He was with Elbert Elbertse Stoothoff a representative of Flatlands in the General Assembly held at the City Hall in New Amsterdam on Apr. 10, 1664, and was also a delegate to the Convention held Mar. 26, 1674, at New Orange to confer with Gov. Colve. He took the oath of allegiance in Flatlands Sept. —, 1687. On March 8, 1691, he bought of John Tilton all his real estate in Gravesend, L. I.2


     Steven emigrated in April 1660, from Holland.3

     Steven married Marretje Gerritse Van Couwenhoven before 1664.2

     Steven died after 1702.2

     William Roe Van Voorhees, son of John Van Voorhees and Hannah Roe, was born on 10 November 1764.1

     William married Rachael Vail on 12 May 1788.1

     William Roe Van Voorhees
resided all his life at Fishkill Village, and was a prominent man in the affairs of both the town and the Dutch Church in that village. From the records of the Church it appears that he was elected deacon for the years 1 807, 1 808, 1811,1812. He held the commission of Major in the 149th Regiment of N. Y. S. Infantry during the war of 1812, and was with his regiment encamped at White Plains, N. Y., for some time. In personal appearance he was of commanding presence, being nearly six feet in height and of large and well-built frame. He was of a genial and kindly disposition and especially fond of children, and was a great favorite among the young people of the village. He was also noted for his unbounded hospitality, and his house was constantly filled with visitors from among his friends and kindred.1


     William died on 2 November 1828, at age 63.1
