Gertrude C. Walling, fiest wife of Lester R. Van Dyke
     Gertrude Catherine Walling, daughter of Nathaniel D. Walling and Gertrude Tappen, was born on 2 July 1900.5

     Gertrude married Lester Rushmore Van Dyke, son of Stephen R. Van Dyke and Selina Seaman, on 21 August 1920, at Nassau, New York.6

     Gertrude died on 15 August 1969, at New York, at age 69. There appears to be a variation of year of death. Headstone has 1968 and citations have 1969.7,8 She was buried at Brookville Cemetery, Upper Brookville, Nassau, New York.9

     Gertrude Catherine Walling appeared on the 1905 New Jersey Census of Raritan, Monmouth, New Jersey in the household of her mother, Gertrude.10

     Gertrude appeared on the 1910 appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Brookville, Nassau, New York in the household of her grandmother, Susan.11

     Gertrude and Lester appeared on the 1925 New York Census of Hicksville, Nassau, New York, enumerated 1 June 1925. Lester was working as a carpenter. Their children, Gerald Albert, Harold Edmond and Lester Clinton, and Lester's brother, Willet were listed as living with them.12

     Gertrude and Lester appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Hicksville, Nassau, New York, at East Avenue, enumerated 9 April 1930. Lester owned his home, had no radio at the time. His occupation was a house carpenter. Their children, Gerald Albert, Harold Edmond and Lester Clinton were listed as living with them.13

     Gertrude appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Kings Park, Suffolk, New York, at Kings Park State Hospital, enumerated 5 April 1940. Gertrude was listed as an inmate. According to the census, on 01 April 1935, she was at the same location. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $21.35 in the year 2022. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2022 would have cost $.17 cents in 1940.14

Nathaniel D. Walling1

Nathaniel D. Walling, husband of Gretrude Tappen
     Nathaniel D. Walling was born in October 1858.1

     Nathaniel married Gertrude Tappen, daughter of Edmund S. Tappen and Susan Meighy, on 8 June 1887, at Brooklyn, Kings, New York.2,3

     Nathaniel died on 26 April 1905, at age 46. He died From Lock Jaw.
Nathaniel D. Walling a farmer near Brewster, in Raritan Township, recently ran a pitchfork in his foot. He went to the hospital at Long Branch for treatment but died there at 5 o'clock yesterday from lockjaw.

Published in The Matawan Journal, Thursday Afternoon, April 27, 1905.1 He was buried at Cedarwood Cemetery, Hazlet, Monmouth, New Jersey.1

     Nathaniel and Gertrude appeared on the 1892 New York Census of Brooklyn, Kings, New York, enumerated 16 February 1892. He was listed as a driver. Their children, Mabel, Louis Townsend and Cora were listed as living with them.4

     Nathaniel and Gertrude appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Raritan, Somerset, New Jersey, enumerated 1 June 1900. Nathaniel was a farmer. The census indicated Gretrude had six children, with five living. Their children, Mabel, Louis Townsend, Cora, Arthur, Edmund Starkins and Clinton were listed as living with them.5
