Nils Fritiof Magnuson1

M, b. 28 February 1885, d. 27 April 1970
Nils Fred Magnuson, husband of Esther Peterson
Nils Fritiof Magnuson was born on 28 February 1885 at Bråten, Värmland, Västra Ämtervik, Sverige.1

Nils was listed on the "S. S. Saxonia" passenger ship on 4 May 1909, departing from Liverpool, England. He arrived at Boston, Massachusetts, on 13 May 1909. He was described as 6 feet tall, black hair and blue eyes.2

Nils, at age 33, married Esther Florence Peterson at age 25, daughter of Per Alfred Peterson and Anna Amalia Nilsson, on 7 September 1918 at 1614 4th, Seattle, King, Washington.1,3

Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this first registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. As World War I continued to escalate, the United States instituted a second draft registration. The second registration was for men who had turned 21 since June 5, 1917, so it added men born between June 5, 1896 and June 5, 1897. Two months later, a supplemental registration was held on August 24, 1918 for men who had become 21 years of age since June 5, 1918, adding the names of men who were born between June 5, 1897 and August 24, 1897. With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted it's third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. This added younger men than the previous registrations, those who were born between September 12, 1897 and September 12, 1900; and added an older group of men, born between September 12, 1873 and September 12, 1888. Nils filled out a draft card for World War I on 12 September 1918 (at age 33), while living at King, Washington. He was self employed as a machinist and described as height, tall and medium build with blue eyes and brown hair..4

Nils was naturalized (at age 35) on 8 December 1920, at United States District Court, Washington.5

The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Just about a year before that, in October 1940, President Roosevelt had signed into law the first peacetime selective service draft in U.S. history, due to rising world conflicts. After the U.S. entered WWII a new selective service act required that all men between ages 18 and 65 register for the draft. Between November 1940 and October 1946, over 10 million American men were registered. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the "old man's registration", was conducted on 27 April 1942 and registered men who born on or between 28 April 1877 and 16 February 1897 - men who were between 45 and 64 years old - and who were not already in the military. Nils filled out a draft card for World War II on 27 April 1942 (at age 57), while living at Seattle, King, Washington. He was described as 6 foot tall, 195 pounds, brown hair and blue eyes. There was a scar on his left jaw.6

Nils Fritiof Magnuson died at age 85, on 27 April 1970, at Seattle, King, Washington.7,8

Nils Fritiof Magnuson was buried at Acacia Memorial Park and Funeral Home, Lake Forest Park, King, Washington.9

Arthur Peter Johnson1

M, b. 24 October 1889, d. 5 January 1955
Arthur P. Johnson, husband of Amy Anderson
Arthur Peter Johnson was born on 24 October 1889 at Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin.1,2

Arthur, married Amy Anderson, daughter of August Andersson and Adeline Marthina Cristensen, circa 1912.3

Arthur filled out a draft card for World War I on 5 June 1917 (at age 27), while living at Union Grove, Wisconsin. He was employed as concrete mason and described as height, medium and medium build with blue eyes and light brown hair..4

Arthur Peter Johnson was in Military Service started 26 July 1918 ending 07 February 1919.5

The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Arthur filled out a draft card for World War II on 27 April 1942 (at age 52), while living at Newport, Lake, Illinois. He was described as 5' 8", 185 lbs., light complexion, gray eyes and hair. He was a farmer.2

Arthur Peter Johnson died on 5 January 1955 at age 65.1,6

Arthur Peter Johnson was buried at Lakeside Cemetery, Libertyville, Lake, Illinois.1

Census

Arthur and Amy appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Newport, Lake, Illinois, enumerated 19 April 1940. Arthur was working as a farmer. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $16.26 in the year 2012. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2012 would have cost $.21 cents in 1940.7
