Mrs. Maria Augusta Trapp of Stowe has announced the engagement of her daughter, Eleonore, to Hugh David Campbell, son of Mrs. Wallace Campbell of Peace-dale, R. I., and the late Mr. Campbell. Miss Trapp is the leading soprano in the Trapp Family Singers which have given over 1,200 concerts all over North America, So. America and Europe. Miss Trapp is the daughter of I the late George Trapp and a graduate of Mt. St. Mary Academy in Burlington. Mr. Campbell was graduated ftom Milton Academy and Yale University, class of 51.2


     Hugh, at age 24, married Eleonore Elizabeth von Trapp at age 23, daughter of Capt. Georg Ludwig Ritter von Trapp and Maria Augusta Kutschera, on 13 June 1954, at Stowe, Lamoille, Vermont.3

     Hugh died at age 89, on 1 October 2019, at Vermont,1 and was buried at Common Cemetery, Waitsfield Common, Washington, Vermont.4

HUGH'S OBITUARY
U.S. Veteran Waitsfield, VT

Hugh David Campbell, age 89, of Northfield and formerly of Waitsfield, died peacefully on October 1, 2019, surrounded by his wife and family. Hugh was born on February 20, 1930 in Providence, RI, the son of Wallace (Galena, IL) and Mary Bushnell Hazard Campbell (Peace Dale, RI). He was the loving and much-loved husband of Eleonore “Lorli” Trapp Campbell, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage. Hugh was graduated from Milton Academy, Yale University and Middlebury College (MA). Hugh’s work as an educator (French, college placement, coaching soccer) took them to Canterbury School in New Milford, CT, The Roxbury Latin School in West Roxbury, MA, and Rocky Hill School in East Greenwich, RI, where he served as Headmaster. In 1975, they moved to Waitsfield, VT, where he worked as a financial planner with IDS/American Express now Ameriprise. Growing up in Providence and South County, Hugh loved swimming at Narragansett and fishing in Narrow River with his dad. Hugh enjoyed fly fishing in Vermont, Colorado, and Utah’s Green River. He loved spending time with his 18 grandchildren, working in his woodshop and in the garden, and the challenge of watercolor painting. He found Vermont’s beauty everywhere and in every season. The fishing and painting came together when he wrote and illustrated a children’s book on the life of a trout. He cherished his friendship with God and was an active church member and community leader. Hugh was a devoted father to his seven daughters- Elizabeth (Howard Saxner) Peters of Cambridge, MA; Peggy C. Sanders of Charlotte, NC; Jeanie (Willam Lero) Lero of Hollis, NH; Polly (William Moore) Moore of Waitsfield, VT; Erika (Kevin Copeland) Copeland of Hayden, CO; Hope (Mark McAndrew) McAndrew of East Hardwick, VT; and Martina C. Price of Jericho, VT. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 3 great-grandsons. Another grandson, Timothy David Price, predeceased him. Family and friends are invited to meet on Saturday, October 12th at 10:00 am at the United Church of Christ in Waitsfield, VT, to celebrate Hugh’s life. Burial will follow at the Common Cemetery, 1027-1103 Joslin Hill Road, Waitsfield. A reception will follow. Online condolences may be left at www.dayfunerals.com.      Jane Campbell was born on 7 February 1924 at Montreal, Canada.1

     Jane, married Dr. Barton Peck Smith, son of Roger P. Smith and Elsie Mccartney, circa 1948, at Peace Dale Congregational church, Peace Dale, Rhode Island.

Barton P. Smith, Son of Former Cityan, Marries in Rhode Island

Much local interest attends the announcement of the wedding in Peace Dale, R. I„ of the son of a former Waxahachian, with the arrival of the account of the nuptials of Barton Peck Smith and Miss Jane Campbell. The bridegroom’s mother, Mrs. Roger Peck Smith, will be remembered as the former Miss Elsie McCartney of this city. The wedding of the couple was solemnized in the Peace Dale Congregational church with the Rev. R. Vernon Lawson officating at the ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Campbell, Peace Dale, and her bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Peck Smith, now of Canajoharie, N. Y. Miss Anne Campbell was her sisters maid of honor, while the bridegrooms brother William Pierce Smith served as best man. Following the wedding, a reception honoring the couple held at the Dunes club, Narragansett, after which the couple departed for a wedding trip. Mr and Mrs. Smith wili establish a home in New York Ciry in the fall. The bridegroom, who is graduate of the Canajohari high school, served as aviation cadet with the United States Army Air forces He was graduated from Yale, with the class of 1947 where he was a member of Berzelius, St. Elmo, the Whiffenpoofs and honorary societies. He is now- attending the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia university, New York City. His bride, who was honored at many prenuptial courtesies, attended Miss Porter's school Farmington, Conn. and Pine; Manor. She is a graduate of Pembroke college, with the class of 1946.1,2


     Jane died on 7 February 2016, at age 92,1 and was buried at Oak Dell Cemetery, South Kingstown, Washington, Rhode Island.3

SMITH, Jane (Campbell)

Of North Hill, Needham, and Wakefield, Rl, died February 7, 2016, following a long illness. She was born on October 7, 1924, in Montreal, Canada to Mary Hazard Campbell and Wallace Campbell II. Jane was predeceased in 2009 by her devoted husband of 61 years, Barton P. Smith, M.D. They lived in Westwood, MA for over 50 years. She was the loving mother of Heather S. Collins of Hingham, Holly L. Smith-Reynolds of Wakefield, Rl, Martha B. McManamy of Newburyport, Bruce E. Smith of Norwood and Christopher H. Smith, M.D. of Seattle, Washington. Also survived by nine cherished grandchildren: Nicholas, Alison and Hilary Collins; Charles Reynolds; Evan, Conor and Laura McManamy; and Emery and Rae Hirschfeld-Smith. Ms. Smith also had three sons-in-law: Jeffrey Collins, John McManamy, M.D. and Hanson Reynolds and one daughter-in-law, Karin Hirschfeld. She is also survived by her beloved brother Hugh Campbell and his wife Lorli, of Stowe, Vermont, and by 13 nieces and nephews. Jane Smith believed in the value of each individual's worth and demonstrated a lifelong commitment to helping special-needs individuals become contributing members of society. She was one of the founding parents of what is now known as The Arc of South Norfolk, where she worked for more than 30 years. Beginning as a parent-volunteer, Jane became Associate Executive Director of The Arc, developing community based vocational, residential, respite and social service programs. Among her significant accomplishments was inspiring Polaroid Corp. to sell 7.5 acres of land in Westwood, valued at over $1 million, for $1 .00 to build "A Place of Our Own," which houses the myriad programs provided by The Arc. Currently The Arc of South Norfolk serves more than 500 families with various programs, envisioned by the founders as a human and civil rights movement. At the time of her retirement in 1997, Ms. Smith's career was recognized in numerous citations from legislators across the Commonwealth and Rl, as well as by her peers who in her honor dedicated the Jane Campbell Smith Community Room at the building she helped fund and build. Jane graduated from Pine Manor Junior College and earned her B.A. cum laude from Brown University (Pembroke College) in 1946. In 1947, she married Barton P. Smith, who was an internist with Dedham Medical Associates for most of his career. Jane obtained a Masters of Science in Management from Lesley University in 1984 and began consulting with the Executive Service Corps where she advised non-profit organizations on a variety of projects. The Smiths were lifelong members of The First Parish of Westwood Church where they were members of the choir and active participants on a number of boards. Jane loved spending time in South County, Rl, where she maintained a second home and participated in many activities: gardening, swimming, visiting with relatives and friends and playing tennis, among them. She was a longtime member of The Dedham Country and Polo Club, the Fox Hill Garden Club, the Chilton Club, and the Afternoon Club. In Rl, she was a lifelong member of The Dunes Club in Narragansett, was active in the South County Garden Club and spent many volunteer hours at the Hazard Memorial Garden in Peace Dale. A memorial service honoring Jane Smith will be held on April 9, at 2:00 P.M. at The Peace Dale Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 261 Columbia Street, Peace Dale, Rl 02SS3.
