Mrs. R. V. Voorhees

Gladstone - Mrs. Martha Voorhees of Valley View Terr, died yesterday (March 26, 1959) after a long illness. Born in Gladstone, 75 years ago she had lived here all her life. She was the widow of Richard V. Voorhees, who died about 30 years ago. Mrs. Voorhees is survived by three sons, Clarence of Franklin Park, Lester at home, and Orlis of Bound Brook; two daughters Mrs. Mildred Cavanaugh of Pottersville and Miss Evelyn Voorhees, at home; one sister, Mrs Ida Flemming of Dover; eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Services will be held in the Bailey Funeral Home, Peapack Sunday at 2:30 , p.m. The Rev. Russel C. Block, pastor of the Peapack Reformed Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Gladstone.7

     The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Just about a year before that, in October 1940, President Roosevelt had signed into law the first peacetime selective service draft in U.S. history, due to rising world conflicts. After the U.S. entered WWII a new selective service act required that all men between ages 18 and 65 register for the draft. Between November 1940 and October 1946, over 10 million American men were registered. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the "old man's registration", was conducted on 27 April 1942 and registered men who born on or between 28 April 1877 and 16 February 1897 - men who were between 45 and 64 years old - and who were not already in the military. John filled out a draft card for World War II on 16 October 1940 (at age 29), while living at 160 Chestnut Street, Montclair, Essex, New Jersey. He was listed as self employed.4

     John married Agnes V. Nugent in 1955, at New Jersey.5,6

JOHN L BACKLUND

- 80, of AVON, died Sunday at home. He was supervisor and general foreman for Damon G. Douglas Construction, Newark, and Ralph M. Monpaque, Essex County, for 25 years, retiring in 1978. He was a member of Union Local 1342, Bloomfield, for 45 years. Mr. Backlund was born in Montclair and moved to Avon 20 years ago. Surviving are his wife, Agnes V. Nugent Backlund; two sons, Edward, Montclair, and Raymond, San Diego, and six grandchildren. Moriarty Funeral Home, Montclair, is in charge of arrangements.12
