John Oberg, son of Eric Olof Oberg and Maria Nilsdotter, was born on 19 May 1890 at Escanaba, Delta, Michigan.^1,2

     Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this first registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. As World War I continued to escalate, the United States instituted a second draft registration. The second registration was for men who had turned 21 since June 5, 1917, so it added men born between June 5, 1896 and June 5, 1897. Two months later, a supplemental registration was held on August 24, 1918 for men who had become 21 years of age since June 5, 1918, adding the names of men who were born between June 5, 1897 and August 24, 1897. With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted it's third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. This added younger men than the previous registrations, those who were born between September 12, 1897 and September 12, 1900; and added an older group of men, born between September 12, 1873 and September 12, 1888. He was described as height, medium and medium build with blue eyes and light hair..³

     The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Just about a year before that, in October 1940, President Roosevelt had signed into law the first peacetime selective service draft in U.S. history, due to rising world conflicts. After the U.S. entered WWII a new selective service act required that all men between ages 18 and 65 register for the draft. Between November 1940 and October 1946, over 10 million American men were registered. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the "old man's registration", was conducted on 27 April 1942 and registered men who born on or between 28 April 1877 and 16 February 1897 - men who were between 45 and 64 years old - and who were not already in the military. John filled out a draft card for World War II on 27 April 1942 (at age 51), while living at Iron River, Iron, Michigan.⁴

     John died on 13 June 1972, at Iron River, Iron, Michigan, at age 82,^5,6 and was buried at Resthaven Cemetery, Iron River, Iron, Michigan.⁷

     Kathryn Oberg, daughter of Eric Olof Oberg and Maria Nilsdotter, was born on 3 February 1885 at Escanaba, Michigan.^2,1

     Kathryn married Claude C. Brown circa 1917.³

     Kathryn died on 17 January 1951, at Iron River, Iron, Michigan, at age 65,^4,1 and was buried at Iron River Cemetery, Iron River, Iron, Michigan.⁴

     Kenneth C. Oberg, son of Charles Gustave Oberg and Ethel Vivien Ipes, was born on 4 January 1911 at Dearborn, Wayne, Michigan.²

     Kenneth married Mildred Manning on 17 November 1935, at Wyandotte, Wayne, Michigan.³

     Kenneth married Rosalia Oltean, daughter of Dan Oltean and Elizabeth "Surname Unknown", on 3 November 1943, at Highland Park, Wayne, Michigan.^4,5

     Kenneth died on 11 December 2001, at Dearborn, Wayne, Michigan, at age 90,² and was buried at Michigan Memorial Park, Flat Rock, Wayne, Michigan.⁶

     Mann married Engebaar A. Johnson, daughter of Seth Johnson and Margret A. "Surname Unknown", after 1910.⁵

     Marshall E. Oberg, son of Mann Emanuel Oberg and Engebaar A. Johnson, was born on 27 September 1919 at Michigan.^1,2

     Marshall E. Oberg was in Military Service on 27 September 1941 at Wausau, Wisconsin, He was an air cadet assigned to the Air Corp. According to 'Application for Headstone or Marker', he was assigned to the 27th Bomb Squadron, 30th Bomb Wing.

March Field, Cal., March 6. (UP) -- Two army air force men were killed and three others were reported missing today in the crash of an army bomber eight miles northwest of San Bernardino yesterday.
The March Field army public relations office identified the dead as: First Lieut. MARSHALL E. O'BERG, 23, who leaves his widow, Marian, 1475 College Ave., Fresno, Cal., and his father, Manning E. O'Berg, 123 Ninth Ave., Iron River, Mich., Staff Sgt. RUSSELL P. BOYD, 21, who leaves his mother, Mrs. Julia Traber, 338 College Ave., South Milwaukee, Wis.
Believed to have been aboard the plane and officially reported as missing by the army were: Capt. MARVIN J. FRUM, 23, wife, Mae Elaine Frum, 344 Fourth St., Perris, Cal., father Millard J. Frum, Danbury, Iowa. Technical Sgt. MERLE F. DRAPER, 23, parents, Mr. and Mrs. William F. Draper, Westmoreland, Kans. Staff Sgt. FRED BEDFORD, 38, wife, Mildred, 3459 Florida St., Riverside, Cal.²

He was buried at Nassau Knolls Cemetery, Port Washington, Nassau, New York.⁴
