M, b. 19 January 1874, d. 17 February 1937
Karl (Charles) Arvid Konstantin Rawstrom was born on 19 January 1874 at Stockholm, Södertälje, Sverige.2,3,4 He immigrated in 1893.5
Karl married Hilda Kristina Bäcklund, daughter of Johan Jönsson Bäcklund and Karolina Andersdotter, on 7 May 1897.6 Karl (Charles) Arvid Konstantin Rawstrom was naturalized on 28 May 1900; He held Certificate of Naturalization, issued by Common Please Court, Newark, New Jersey, no number noted.7
Karl, his wife, Hilda and their children, Elsie, Beda and Ruth were found on the "S. S. United States" passenger list departing 19 March 1904, from Christiania (Oslo), Norway. They arrived at the Port of New York, 02 Apr 1904. They were going home.8
Due to a need for men to serve during World War I, the United States instituted a draft. The first registration was for men between the ages of 21 and 31. As a result, this first registration included men born between June 5, 1886 and June 5, 1896. As World War I continued to escalate, the United States instituted a second draft registration. The second registration was for men who had turned 21 since June 5, 1917, so it added men born between June 5, 1896 and June 5, 1897. Two months later, a supplemental registration was held on August 24, 1918 for men who had become 21 years of age since June 5, 1918, adding the names of men who were born between June 5, 1897 and August 24, 1897. With no end in sight for World War I, the United States instituted it's third and final registration. It included all men who were between the ages of 18 and 21, and 31 to 45 years of age. This added younger men than the previous registrations, those who were born between September 12, 1897 and September 12, 1900; and added an older group of men, born between September 12, 1873 and September 12, 1888. Karl filled out a draft card for World War I on 12 September 1918 (at age 44), while living at 153 Valley Road, Montclair, Essex, New Jersey. He was self employed as a stairmaker and cabinet builder and described as height, medium and medium build with grey eyes and grey hair..9
Karl and his daughter, Doris Ellen was found on the "Gripsholm" passenger list on 20 June 1935, departing Göteborg, Göteborg och Bohus, Sverige. Their final destination was Port of New York.10
Karl died on 17 February 1937, at Montclair, New Jersey, at age 63,11,12 and was buried at Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Montclair, Essex, New Jersey.13,12

February 09 1921 Uncle Gotfrid came home late and gave no reason for the delay. Sorry to say, he doesn't treat Moie very well. He was a little intoxicated last Saturday she told me and hit her so hard a black and blue lip for several days after. (You can see he doesn't love her but she runs around and does everything for him but is crazy about Astrid).(It should be noted, 'Moie' was Carl Seadale's wife, Anna Marie, and 'Gotfrid' was Carl.)3
March 04, 1921 Astrid was waiting up for us. We had a very pleasant evening (I mean it) and I also made a batch of fudge which turned out ok. The reason I didn't stay overnight was that Moie was afraid Uncle Gotfrid would be intoxicated when he did not come home before 10.
May 31, 1921 Tonight I went right up to Moie's from the office. It was about the only time I had and I wanted to finish my organdie dress and hat if possible. I called Uncle Gotfrid at Sprague Electric but he had already left at 4:30. But he did not get home until after I arrived, and where he had been nobody knows, but we can surmise! He had to blow up his tires he had told Moie and that took him almost 2 hours! He lies more than a dead cat.
October 20, 1921 Carl Danielson came running after us and wanted to see me. It was funny he had nothing special to ask me but told me all about the smash up Uncle Gotfrid had had while driving drunk. Mama knew this long ago (about two weeks ago) but it was all new to me because I hadn't been told about it. Mr. Nuse next door Moie fixed it up with the judge so the verdict was he had been drinking but was not drunk. So he was fined $26.40 for reckless driving. His whole car was smashed up. He and the man with him was bruised and the truck they ran into, as it was turning out the turnpike was damaged a couple of hundred dollars, otherwise no serious injury was done.
December 09 1921 I embroidered on the little apron I am making for Astrid's Christmas present and kept at it off and on all day until I finished it.
January 20, 1922 It was payday for Uncle Gotfrid and he did not get home until a little late, about 7 o'clock. So Moie was sure he had and spent his money for drink. He did not seem drunk to me but I guess he did have a little. Moie said he was so drunk last Friday that Mr. Nuse had to go to Bloomfield and bring him home.
July 28 1924 Up at Moie's old Uncle Gotfrid made me sit on his lap an everything. I despise him and he likes to make out I'm the girl for him, the fresh old married man. That's one reason I don't like going to Moie's anymore than just to be civil and sociable. Poor Astrid, I don't know what is the matter with her. I'm afraid she is a little off. Probably from the rough treatment she got after her mother died. But anyhow the fact is she may have to stay in the second grade for the third year. She will probably grow out of it as she gets older but I'm not so crazy about dumb kids.
