Wilbur Remsen Bennett, husband of Margaret Fitting
Wilbur Remsen Bennett, son of Daniel Webster Bennett and Sarah Van Dyke, was born on 1 September 1892 at Brooklyn, New York.2

Wilbur married Margaret Fitting circa 1915.3

The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Just about a year before that, in October 1940, President Roosevelt had signed into law the first peacetime selective service draft in U.S. history, due to rising world conflicts. After the U.S. entered WWII a new selective service act required that all men between ages 18 and 65 register for the draft. Between November 1940 and October 1946, over 10 million American men were registered. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the "old man's registration", was conducted on 27 April 1942 and registered men who born on or between 28 April 1877 and 16 February 1897 - men who were between 45 and 64 years old - and who were not already in the military. Wilbur filled out a draft card for World War II on 26 April 1942 (at age 49), while living at 152 Baldwin Avenue, Locust Valley, Nassau, New York. He was working at "Piping Rock Club" and described as 5' 8", 175 lbs., blue eyes and brown hair4 and was buried at Brookville Cemetery, Upper Brookville, Nassau, New York.5 He witnessed the death of Wilbur Remsen Bennett on 20 May 1973.5

Census

Wilbur appeared on the 1900 Federal Census in Brooklyn, Kings, New York in the household of his parents, Daniel and Sarah.6

Wilbur appeared on the 1910 Federal Census in Brooksville, Nassau, New York in the household of his parents, Daniel and Sarah. He was doing day work.7

Wilbur appeared on the 1915 New York Census in Oyster Bay, Nassau, New York in the household of his parents, Daniel and Sarah. He was a laborer on a farm.8

Wilbur and Margaret appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Brookville, Nassau, New York, at Brookville Piping Rock Rrod, enumerated 17 January 1920.9

Wilbur and Margaret appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Brooksville, Nassau, New York, enumerated 25 April 1930. It appears (difficult to read) he was working as a records clerk for a machinist company. Their children, Amelia were listed as living with them.10

Wilbur and Margaret appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Locust Valley, Nassau, New York, at 140 Baldwin Ave., enumerated 5 April 1940. Wilbur was working as a truck driver for a private club. They had an uncle, George McLaughlin, living in the household. As an item of interest, a dollar in 1940 would equal $21.35 in the year 2022. A $3.50 gallon of milk in 2022 would have cost $.17 cents in 1940.11
