Obituary

MRS. GERTRUDE CROSS KNOWLTON

Many were the hearts that were bowed down with grief when it was known that Mrs. Gertrude Cross, wife of Harry L. Knowlton had stepped across into her Heavenly home at eight o'clock on the evening of March 18 after an illness of 18 days of peritonitis. All that loving hearts and hands could do was done, every suggestion tried and every wish granted, but God wanted her. Mrs. Knowlton was born in Foxcroft Sept 8, 1884, a daughter of Moses S. and Elizabeth (Pratt) Cross. Following an education in Foxcroft academy and a musical training, she took a teacher's training course at Farmington Normal school and was a most successful teacher in Foxcroft, Dover and Sangerville village. She was united in marriage Sept. 16, 1907, to Harry L. Knowlton of Sangerville and after a wedding trip they settled in East Sangerville where they had one of the prettiest homes and where for eight happy, useful years she lived, loved and respected by all the community. She was a diligent and untiring worker and her kindly disposition and the lovable qualities of her nature make the loss seem greater to all who have been associated with her. She was an honored member of the Ladies' aid of the church, having served as president an extended time, and was also a member of the East Sangerville grange, and it is in these circles that her presence and valued assistance will be missed. She was a faithful wife and mother and the tenders sympathy of all who knew her goes to the afflicted relatives. As I look on her dear face as she lay so peacefully on her snowy white couch, the busy hands folded forever, surrounded by a profusion of beautiful flowers that testified to the place she held in the hearts of her friends, all the pleasant past which leaves a fragrance in my memory which I shall ever cherish, returned to me and I recalled the many happy hours we spent together when she boarded in my home and for some years after. We walked and talked and played and sang and worked together; always so pleasant and companionable that I looked forward to the Monday mornings when Gertrude would return; and as I stood there, I wondered who could hesitate about 'going home' with such friends to meet us on the other side. The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by J. H. Wilkins, who spoke very comfortingly to the bereaved ones. Besides a husband, she leaves two sons, Keith aged seven, and Carroll, aged three; also her parents and one sister, Mrs. Alice Cross Smith of Foxcroft, to mourn her loss.14
