Obituary

Moses S. Cross

Moses S. Cross whose death occurred March 29 ta (at) 1.15 a.m. and which has already been noticed in The Observer was born in Sebec Dec. '0 (30) Dec 1856, the son of Jeremiah and Ellen (Eleanor) Rollins Cross. He had one brother, Fred, who remained on the home place; a sister, Mrs. Jennie (Pratt) Stevens residing in Lincoln; a half brother, the late John C. Cross; and a half sister, Mrs. Ella Cass (?), both of Dover Foxcroft, who passed on several years ago. Mr. Cross went to the Blethen House to work when he was 16 years old, remaining there until a few years after his marriage to Mary Elizabeth Pratt Jan 26 1884. They then moved to the farm on the Milo state road where he lived until his death. Two children were born to them: Gertrude (Mrs. Harry L. Knowlton) of Sangerville and Alice (Mrs. Henry Smith) who lived on the adjoining estate. Mrs. Cross passed on Dec. 11, 1930, after a brief illness and since then Mr. Cross became very disenhearted as he was in a feeble condition with rheumatism and heart trouble of long duration being confined to the use of crutches. The loss of his finely equipped barn by fire and the burning of several head of nice stock on Dec 31, 1929, was another discouraging incident which told on his broken health, but still he 'carried on' and rebuilt the following spring. He was a prosperous farmer as one could readily see by the attractive home and surroundings, and every effort was seconded by his faithful wife. After the wife's death, the daughter, Mrs. Henry Smith, moved home and tenderly cared for her father the remaining months of his life. At the passing on of his wife he expressed a wish that were he ever ill he might have the same nurse and that when the end came that the same pastor might officiate, and these wishes were gratified. Mr. Cross will be greatly missed in the community where he had lived so many years, and in the village where he was often seen. The surviving relatives are a sister, Mrs. Jenny Stevens, the daughter, Mrs. Alice Smith, and four grandchildren, Keith D. and Carroll Knowlton, Cleon and Elizabeth Smith. The funeral which were held at the home March 31 was largely attended, Rev. J. W. Meiser of Milo speaking comforting words to the bereaved ones. The floral offerings were many and very beautiful. The bearers were the son-in-law, Henry Smith, a nephew, Caleb H. Weston, a grandson, Keith Knowlton and Ormand Hill. Burial was in the Lee Cemetery. M. R. S.18
