DOVER-FOXCROFT and BOCA RATON, Fla. – Gladys H. Thomas, 86, died peacefully March 25, 2011, at her home in Boca Raton, Fla. She was born May 5, 1925, to Irving and Edith (Littlefield) Emerson of East Sangerville. Gladys married Charles H. Thomas and together they had 10 children. Gladys was a dedicated wife and mother, always putting family first. In addition to raising nine children, she was employed by Guilford Industries for many years, later working for Hathaway Shirt Co. until she and her family moved to Boca Raton, Fla., in 1968. She was employed by Henz Interiors of Deerfield Beach as an interior design consultant from 1970 until she retired in 1983. She enjoyed her retirement by absorbing herself in cooking, reading, quilting and spending her summers in Maine visiting her family. She will be sadly missed by the many lives she touched during her lifetime. Gladys was predeceased by her husband, Charles; two of her sons, Gerald and Paul; a daughter, Sheila; and two of her grandchildren, Adam and Kimberly Thomas. She is survived by seven children, Stuart of Boca Raton, Fla., David and his wife, Joann, of Dover-Foxcroft, Ronald and his wife, Karen, of Franklin, James and his companion, Robert, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Cathie and her husband, Greg Goodine, of Atkinson, Cindy of Lakeworth, Fla., and Vickie and her husband, Daniel Parsons, of Boca Raton, Fla. Gladys was nana to 21 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three siblings, Arthur Emerson of Brewer, Nora Turner of Dover-Foxcroft and John Emerson of Boca Raton, Fla; numerous nephews and nieces. Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at Lary Funeral Home, 62 Summer St., Dover-Foxcroft. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, at United Baptist Church, 146 East Main St., Dover-Foxcroft. Burial will be in the family lot at Rural Grove Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Special Olympics Maine Inc., 125 John Roberts Road, Suite 19, South Portland, ME 04106-3295 or at www.specialolympics maine.org. She was born in Hampden, August 26 1904, daughter of Sewell and Helen Leavitt Littlefield. She was a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary at Guilford. Surviving are her husband, Charles E. of Dover-Foxcroft; two sons, Arthur E., of Brewer and John E., of Riverside, Calif., two daughters, Mrs. Gladys H. Thomas and Mrs. Nora E. Turner, both of Dover-Foxcroft; two sisters, Mrs. Nora L. Mann of Bangor and Mrs. Madeline Barclay of Bucksport, and 16 grandchildren and several cousins. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Lary Funeral Home on Summer street with the Rev. Clifton J. Wood of the Methodist church officiating. The remains will be entombed pending burial in the spring. Friends may call at the Lary funeral home Tuesday from 2 to 4 o'clock in the afternoon and 7 to 9 o'clock at night.9

BREWER – Arthur E. Emerson, 90, husband of the late Muriel (Harvey) Emerson, died Nov. 7, 2011, at a Bangor health care center. He was born July 28, 1921, in Sangerville, son of Charles E. and Edith (Littlefield) Emerson.

Arthur was a graduate of Guilford High School, Husson College and Bryant College in Rhode Island. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific, and he and Muriel married in 1953.

He worked for many years for Eastern Fine Paper, Brewer, retiring as company treasurer. Arthur was an avid golfer, reader and "do-it-yourselfer," and he enjoyed the time he spent with his morning coffee friends at McDonald’s.

Surviving are three children, Becky Armstrong and her husband, Don, of Brewer, Edith Campbell and her husband, Ron, of Hampton, N.H., and Wendy Oak and her husband, Ricky, of Port Angeles, Wash; and six grandchildren, Ben Armstrong and his wife, Briana, and their daughter, Jocelyn, of Bangor, Kate Chambers and her husband, Eric, of Brewer, Abbie Armstrong of Bangor, Jason Oak of Virginia, Samantha and Matthew Oak, both of Washington state. He is also survived by a son, Kenneth Marhevka and his wife, Mary, and family of Peckville, Pa; and a daughter, Sheila Arnone and her husband, Steven, and family of Scranton, Pa; a brother, John Emerson and his wife, Chris, of Florida; a sister, Nora Turner of Dover-Foxcroft; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife in 2008; and one sister, Gladys Thomas.

Family and friends may visit 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer. Burial will be in Dover-Foxcroft.       Dateline Dover Foxcroft - Miss Ida M. Folsom was hostess at a brunch party recently, at her Winter Street home, in honor of Mrs. Charles W (N) Stanhope who recently returned from a trip to Hollywood. Mrs. Stanhope spoke of her plane trip to Hollywood, of some of the film stars whom she met, and of her visit with her sister Mrs. John Van Pelt, known on screen and radio as Myra Marsh, circa 31 December 1946.6

     Maine Forests, Fields and Streams was the subject of a paper prepared by Mrs. Mary Halselton Noyes at a meeting on Jan 30 (1948) with Mrs. Hortense Bigelow, hostess. The refreshment committee will include Mrs. Maude Stanhope, Miss Bertha Tardy and Mrs. Hilda Robbins.7

     Stephen Small died at age 92, on 11 May 1881.3 He was buried in Small -Philbrick Cemetery at Wellington, Piscataquis, Maine.3
